Random forest and nature-inspired algorithms for mapping groundwater nitrate concentration in a coastal multi-layer aquifer system

Quoc Bao Pham et al.

Summary: Accurate prediction of groundwater nitrate concentrations is crucial for pollution control and sustainable management of groundwater resources. This study develops and compares novel hybrid algorithms combined with the random forest algorithm for mapping groundwater nitrate concentrations in the coastal multi-aquifers of the Mekong Delta. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of these models in predicting groundwater nitrate pollution in different deltaic locations, revealing high nitrate concentrations in the south-central region.

Geochemical characterization and health risk assessment in two diversified environmental settings (Southern Italy)

Francesco Rufino et al.

Summary: An integrated approach using chemical and microbial indicators was tested in two different sites in the Campania Plain, Southern Italy to define water-rock interaction processes, differentiate sources of pollution, evaluate water quality, and identify elements of concern for human health. The study found that groundwater showed specific signatures and enrichment in alkali ions moving towards coastal areas, attributed to interactions with volcanic rocks. Factor Analysis identified pollution sources, such as leaks in the sewer system and manure spreading in agricultural activities. Additionally, the use of major and trace elements along with microbiological indicators allowed for accurate differentiation of contamination processes.

Assessment of intrinsic aquifer vulnerability at continental scale through a critical application of the drastic framework: The case of South America

Fabrizio Rama et al.

Summary: This study presents an assessment of the vulnerability of South America's aquifers using the DRASTIC method. The results classify the continent into five vulnerability classes, with the Amazon region, coastal aquifers, Andean valleys, and alluvial aquifers of main rivers being highly vulnerable. The depth to water table is identified as the most significant factor. The study provides a valuable foundation for sustainable land-use and water management in South America.

Hybridization of GALDIT method to assess actual and future coastal vulnerability to seawater intrusion

Abdelmadjid Boufekane et al.

Summary: In the Jijel plain in North Algeria, overexploitation of the coastal aquifer and seawater intrusion pose major risks to the groundwater resource. This study proposes a new approach that integrates groundwater vulnerability assessment and numerical modeling to predict actual and future seawater intrusion. By simulating three scenarios under different water demand and climate conditions, the study concludes that groundwater level variation and recharge are key factors in controlling groundwater vulnerability to seawater intrusion.
