Effective removal of Hg2+ and Cd2+ in aqueous systems by Fe-Mn oxide modified biochar: A combined experimental and DFT calculation

Tong Sun et al.

Summary: The Fe-Mn oxide modified biochar (FM-BC) was synthesized using straw biochar, and the mechanism of Hg2+ and Cd2+ adsorption was explained through adsorption experience data, characterization, and DFT calculation. The results showed that FM-BC had more adsorption sites than pristine biochar, and chemisorption was the rate-limiting step for Hg2+ and Cd2+. The main adsorption mechanisms were chemical complexation reaction and coprecipitation reaction, while oxygen-containing functional groups and metal-pi interaction played a crucial role in the adsorption process.

Novel Zn-Fe engineered kiwi branch biochar for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Yuehui Tan et al.

Summary: The study compared the adsorption efficiency of a novel adsorbent KB/Zn-Fe made from kiwi branch biochar modified with Zn-Fe with original biochar for Pb(II) removal from wastewater. Results showed that KB/Zn-Fe had a higher maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) in aqueous solution compared to original biochar, and the adsorption capacity decreased with increasing biochar dose. Co-existence of NO3- had little impact on the absorptive capacity of KB/Zn-Fe, while Cl- enhanced the adsorption capacity. Multiple adsorption mechanisms by KB/Zn-Fe were identified, providing guidance for future production of biochar with efficient adsorption ability.

Summary: Metal oxide-modified biochar showed excellent adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In this study, iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) oxide-modified biochar (BC-FM) was synthesized using rice straw biochar, and its adsorption process, removal effect, and mechanism of cadmium (Cd) adsorption in wastewater treatment were investigated. Summary: In this study, a one-pot sol-gel pyrolysis method was used to synthesize a MnFe2O4 functionalized magnetic sawdust-based biochar (MnFe2O4@SBC) for efficient removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF). The results show that MnFe2O4@SBC has a homogeneous distribution of MnFe2O4 and a richer pore structure and functional groups compared to the original biochar. A systematic comparison with commercial activated carbon (CAC) demonstrates that MnFe2O4@SBC has much higher adsorption capacity and selectivity. Nur Shakinah Razali et al.

Summary: In this study, high-surface-area-activated carbon (MSMPAC) was synthesized using Mango (Mangifera indica) seeds and peels mixed fruit wastes as a renewable precursor and microwave-induced ZnCl2 activation. The performance of MSMPAC in removing cationic dye (methylene blue, MB) from water was evaluated. Langmuir model was found to fit the adsorption isotherm data well, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 232.8 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. MB adsorption on MSMPAC surface was spontaneous and endothermic. The mechanisms of MB adsorption included electrostatic forces, pore filling, pi-pi stacking, and H-bonding.

Summary: Enhanced coagulation is widely used to remove heavy metal ions from combined sewer overflows (CSOs), but faces challenges in removing HMs bound to DOM components with small molecular weight. This study explores the MW-based complexing characteristics between Cu(II) ions and CSO-DOM components, showing that Cu(II) ions bound to CSO-DOM are mainly distributed in the MW range of <5 kDa, making them difficult to remove via coagulation.
