Control strategies for atmospheric pressure plasma polymerization of fluorinated silane thin films with antiadhesive properties

Giulia Laghi et al.

Summary: The validity of the Yasuda parameter W/FM as a controlling parameter for plasma polymerization is demonstrated using an atmospheric pressure single electrode plasma jet. Thin films deposited under different W/FM values exhibit different chemical and physical properties. Coatings with similar characteristics can be obtained regardless of the power and feed rate values adopted. Preliminary results show that the deposited coatings have antiadhesive activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

Influence of Co-MOF morphological modulation on its electrochemical performance

Haiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the direct use of original metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as electrode materials to reduce energy consumption and costs during commercialization. By introducing different anions in the synthesis process, three forms of cobalt-based MOFs were obtained, with Co-BTC nanoblock microspheres (CTNBMs) showing the highest specific capacitance. Nanonization of MOFs was found to effectively enhance the energy storage performance. The assembled CTNBM//activated carbon asymmetric supercapacitor device exhibited a high energy density and power density.

A Structure-Activity Study of Aromatic Acid Modulators for the Synthesis of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Faith E. Chen et al.

Summary: This study provides an in-depth investigation of acid modulators and identifies key principles for the synthesis of highly crystalline Zr-MOFs. The competition between the linker and modulator for coordination to the Zr secondary building units is shown to be crucial for effective modulation, with a close match in pKa and structure favoring larger and more well-defined crystallites. The findings have important implications for the scalable and controllable synthesis of MOFs relevant to various applications.

Summary: Carbon dots (CDs), a type of carbon nanomaterials, have been synthesized from olive solid wastes and their properties and antibacterial activity have been evaluated. The study found that the CDs had a quasi-spherical shape, with different sizes for different regions. They exhibited absorption and photoluminescence characteristics, and higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The surface charge of the CDs was found to influence their antibacterial properties.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to a search for alternative antibacterial agents. Nanoparticles have emerged as a promising alternative due to their intrinsic antibacterial activity. However, the mechanisms underlying their action are still not well understood, limiting their use in clinical applications. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial activity of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, as well as the strategies employed by bacteria to develop resistance. Additionally, recent biomedical applications of these nanoparticles with antibacterial activity are discussed.

Modulated construction of Fe-based MOF via formic acid modulator for enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole:Design, degradation pathways, and mechanism

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied for their excellent environmental catalytic capabilities. In this study, a modulation approach using formic acid as a modulator was successfully used to synthesize Fe-based MOFs. The modulated FeMOFs-2 sample showed high specific surface area and catalytic activity, effectively degrading SMX with almost 95% removal efficiency. The addition of formic acid induced the formation of more coordinatively unsaturated metal sites in the catalyst, resulting in structural defects and increased catalytic performance.
