Model of inner-sphere adsorption of oxyanions in goethite - Why is phosphate adsorption more significant than that of sulfate?

Carla Gomes de Albuquerque et al.

Summary: Phosphorus availability in soils is low due to its strong retention by minerals, while sulfur has greater availability due to electrostatic attraction. This study evaluated the inner-sphere complexation of orthophosphate (PO4) and sulfate (SO4) on synthetic goethite samples under different conditions. The results showed that the inner-sphere complexation of PO4 was much stronger than that of SO4, and phosphorus oxyanions displaced certain ligands on the goethite surface, enhancing its surface activity.

Characterizations of heavy metal contamination, microbial community, and resistance genes in a tailing of the largest copper mine in China*

Xiawei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the heavy metal contents, microbial composition, and resistance genes in a copper mine tailing in Dexing Copper Mine, the largest open-pit copper mine in China. The results suggest a possible shaping influence of heavy metals on the microbiome and resistome, providing valuable data for the surveillance and maintenance of the tailing.

Field-scale studies on the change of soil microbial community structure and functions after stabilization at a chromium-contaminated site

Danni Li et al.

Summary: This study examined the diversity and structure of microbial communities in Cr-contaminated soils after chemical stabilization and aging. The results showed that bacterial and fungal communities had higher richness and evenness after stabilization, whereas archaeal communities behaved oppositely. The microbial community structure after stabilization was more similar to uncontaminated soils.
