Strain-induced control of radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles in a plasmonic cavity

Yan-Jiong Zhang et al.

Summary: Graphene can modulate and enhance the optical properties of materials under external strains, leading to various applications including active thermal modulation. This study investigates the near-field radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles mediated by a strain-induced plasmonic cavity consisting of parallel graphene sheets under mechanical strain. The results show that the strain-induced graphene significantly impacts the heat transfer between nanoparticles, and the reflection properties of the cavity can be manipulated by adjusting the strain modulus and twist angles. Moreover, the chemical potential of graphene provides additional ways to modulate the heat transfer. These findings have important implications for thermal management, thermal communication, and energy harvesting applications.

Jie-Long Fang et al.

Summary: This study theoretically demonstrates the near-field radiative thermal switching between nanoparticles and proposes a multilayered structure composed of SiC and VO2. The multilayered structure, combined with the phase transition feature of VO2, enables the active modulation of surface polaritons and efficient control of heat flux between nanoparticles.

Near-field radiative heat transport between nanoparticles inside a cavity configuration

J. Chen et al.

Summary: A theoretical model is proposed to study the near-field radiative heat transfer between SiC/Au nanoparticles in a cavity comprised of two semi-infinite SiC plates. The cavity configuration is found to greatly enhance the heat transfer between the nanoparticles, with amplification exceeding seven orders of magnitude for SiC nanoparticles and two orders of magnitude for Au nanoparticles. Moreover, the electric contribution can surpass the magnetic contribution for Au nanoparticles. The strong coupling between the surface modes of the SiC plates is shown to play a major role in this significant amplification. Additionally, the cavity configuration enables super-diffusive radiative heat transport in one-dimensional SiC nanoparticle chains, allowing for ballistic heat transport. These findings have potential applications in nanoscale thermal management.

Radiative Heat Transfer with a Cylindrical Waveguide Decays Logarithmically Slow

Kiryl Asheichyk et al.

Summary: Radiative heat transfer between far-separated nanoparticles near a conducting nanowire decreases logarithmically with interparticle distance, making the cylinder an effective waveguide for transferring thermal electromagnetic energy over large distances with minimal loss. This leads to a significant increase in heat transfer, where the transferred energy can be comparable to that of isolated particles separated by hundreds of nanometers. A phenomenologically derived analytical formula accurately describes numerical results across a wide range of parameters.

Complete Electromagnetic Dyadic Green Function Characterization in a Complex Environment-Resonant Dipole-Dipole Interaction and Cooperative Effects

Kaizad Rustomji et al.

Summary: The Green function plays a central role in optics, electromagnetism, and acoustics by encapsulating a system's linear response to external sources. Experimental characterization of the full complex Green function is challenging, requiring amplitude and phase sensitive measurements with deep-subwavelength spatial resolution. High spatial resolution in characterizing the Green function provides a unique way to investigate cooperative effects in complex photonic systems.

Can Nanocavities Significantly Enhance Resonance Energy Transfer in a Single Donor-Acceptor Pair?

Yu-Chen Wei et al.

Summary: Long-range resonance energy transfer (RET) and the control of energy transfer on the nanoscale have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Different arrangements of molecules and cavities can affect the enhancements in RET, providing important insights for developing devices capable of long-range RET. Technology like silver cavities under resonance conditions offer significant rate enhancements, showing potential for further research and device development.

Near-field radiative heat transfer in many-body systems

S-A Biehs et al.

Summary: Many-body physics aims to understand emergent properties of systems made of many interacting objects, with recent research focusing on radiative heat transfer in many-body systems. A generalized theory has been developed to describe heat exchange mediated by thermal photons in these systems, covering nonadditivity of heat flux, equilibrium states, relaxation dynamics, heat transport regimes, thermomagnetic effects, and heat transport mechanisms. The review concludes by highlighting outstanding challenges and promising future research directions.

Summary: The study investigates the radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles near the natural hyperbolic material h-BN, showing that the heat flux between the nanoparticles can be efficiently modulated by rotating them due to the coupling with highly directional hyperbolic surface modes in h-BN. The thickness and distance dependence of this effect are also discussed.

Many-particle radiative heat transfer in a nonreciprocal graphene plasmonic cavity

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: This work presents a many-particle radiative heat transfer model within a cavity consisting of two graphene sheets, demonstrating enhanced heat transfer between particles by introducing additional particles and the graphene cavity. The mutual interactions greatly enhance heat exchange and lead to observation of interference fringe patterns. Furthermore, nonreciprocal plasmons on drift-biased graphene offer a rotational degree of freedom to control heat transfer effectively and rectify thermal energy. These findings contribute to understanding and manipulating energy exchange in many-body systems.
