Ultrasound-mediated triboelectric nanogenerator for powering on-demand transient electronics

Dong-Min Lee et al.

Summary: On-demand transient electronics offer exceptional clinical experiences in diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, but their use is limited by conventional power supplies. In this study, we report an ultrasound-mediated transient triboelectric nanogenerator that can generate and degrade energy based on well-defined triggering events. This research provides insight into the practical use of implantable TENGs based on ultrasound-triggered transient material design.

An implantable ultrasound-powered device for the treatment of brain cancer using electromagnetic fields

Yilin Yang et al.

Summary: A promising alternative for treating brain tumors has been developed by creating an implantable ultrasound-powered tumor treating device (UP-TTD) that disrupts cancer cell division without harming normal neurons. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate significant therapeutic effects, with inhibition of tumor cell growth rate and reduction of cancer area. The UP-TTD is wireless, compact, lightweight, and can be adjusted without increasing its size or adding circuits.

Triboelectric current stimulation alleviates in vitro cell migration and in vivo tumor metastasis

Binbin Chu et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel electrotherapeutic strategy using triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) to suppress cancer cell migration in vitro and alleviate early tumor metastasis in vivo. The TENG stimulation with an output current of 150 μA can effectively destroy the cellular cytoskeleton and inhibit cancer cell migration. In mouse models, TENG-based treatments with the current of 150 μA prevent cancer cell spreading to other body sites without apparent toxicity to normal organs and tissues.

Trip13 Depletion in Liver Cancer Induces a Lipogenic Response Contributing to Plin2-Dependent Mitotic Cell Death

Marcos Rios Garcia et al.

Summary: AAA+-ATPase thyroid hormone receptor interacting protein 13 (Trip13) depletion in hepatocellular carcinoma cells leads to accumulation of lipid droplets, disrupting mitotic spindle polarity and resulting in mitotic cell death. Perilipin 2 (Plin2), a lipid-droplet-coating protein, is crucial for multipolar spindle formation, induction of DNA damage, and mitotic cell death. Assessment of Plin2 levels enables the stratification of tumor responsiveness to mitosis-targeting drugs.

The spindle assembly checkpoint is a therapeutic vulnerability of CDK4/6 inhibitor-resistant ER+ breast cancer with mitotic aberrations

Isabel Soria-Bretones et al.

Summary: In this study, a panel of CDK4/6i-resistant breast cancer cell lines and patient-derived organoids were developed. It was found that RB1 loss caused mitotic defects and enhanced sensitivity to TTK inhibition, suggesting TTK inhibitor CFI-402257 as a potential therapeutic strategy for CDK4/6i-resistant breast cancer patients.

Chromosomally unstable tumor cells specifically require KIF18A for proliferation

Carolyn Marquis et al.

Summary: Chromosomal instability (CIN) is a hallmark of tumor cells, caused by changes in microtubule dynamics and control compromising the mitotic spindle. Inhibition of KIF18A results in mitotic delays, multipolar spindles, and increased cell death in CIN tumor cells. Sensitivity to KIF18A knockdown is strongly correlated with centrosome fragmentation, providing a potential target to reduce proliferative capacity of CIN cells.
