Delirium in trauma patients: a 1-year prospective cohort study of 2026 patients

Justus Marquetand et al.

Summary: Delirium in trauma patients is associated with poor outcomes, intensive care management, and various predisposing and/or precipitating factors. Three quarters of patients who had delirium were not able to live independently at home anymore.

Association between emergency department modifiable risk factors and subsequent delirium among hospitalized older adults

Lucas Oliveira J. E. Silva et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between potential emergency department-based modifiable risk factors and subsequent development of delirium among hospitalized older adults free of delirium at the time of ED stay. The findings showed that the length of stay and opioid use in the ED were not associated with an increased risk of incident delirium. However, urinary catheterization in the ED was found to be associated with a higher risk of subsequent delirium.

Association of natural light exposure and delirium according to the presence or absence of windows in the intensive care unit

Hyo Jin Lee et al.

Summary: Exposure to natural light through windows in the ICU was associated with a lower incidence of delirium, reducing the risk of delirium in patients, although other secondary outcomes did not differ between groups.

Associations of delirium with urinary tract infections and asymptomatic bacteriuria in adults aged 65 and older: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Damir Krinitski et al.

Summary: This study supports the association between delirium and urinary tract infection in older adults, but insufficient evidence was found for the association between delirium and asymptomatic bacteriuria in this age group. The limitations of the study include the moderate quality of included studies and a lack of available research on the association between delirium and asymptomatic bacteriuria. Future research should focus on using high-quality approaches to define delirium and UTI, and consider asymptomatic bacteriuria in their investigations.

Delirium and Associated Length of Stay and Costs in Critically Ill Patients

Claudia Dziegielewski et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with delirium had significantly longer ICU and hospital stays and higher costs compared to those without delirium. Further research is needed to identify other determinants of increased costs and strategies to reduce costs for critically ill patients with delirium.
