Tetraphenylethene-based macrocycles: Visualized monitoring the hydrolysis of silicon-oxygen bond and their tunable luminescent properties

Mingxue Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of circular tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives connected with different lengths of the siloxanes chain were successfully designed and synthesized. The fluorescence quenching phenomenon gradually occurred at the molecular level as the chain length increased, providing direct evidence for the effect of chain lengths in the restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR) mechanism with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon. The kinetics of silicon-oxygen bond hydrolysis were successfully monitored in real-time using the AIE method with the RIR mechanism, providing a unique visualization window for kinetic control of Si-O bond hydrolysis. The obtained half-life and reaction kinetic data of Si-O bond-breaking reaction at different pH values can serve as a reference for scientists and engineers in both fundamental research and industrial production. Moreover, the study also demonstrated the potential of intelligent luminescent materials through aggregation-induced color-tunable emission with different aggregation forms of molecules.

Topological effect on fluorescence emission of tetraphenylethylene-based metallacages

Yuhang Liu et al.

Summary: A selective formation of a barrel-shaped or a ball-shaped fluorescent metallacage was achieved by controlling the shape and stoichiometry of the building blocks. The ball-shaped metallacage exhibited stronger and blue-shifted fluorescence compared to the barrel-shaped one in dilute solutions, while a reversal of fluorescence intensities was observed in the aggregation process. This work demonstrates the impact of subtle geometrical factors on the photophysical properties of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Dynamic Covalent Bond Cross-Linked Luminescent Silicone Elastomer with Self-Healing and Recyclable Properties

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Two aldehyde-modified tetraphenylene derivatives with different functionality were synthesized and used to prepare elastomers with excellent fluorescence, mechanical properties, thermal stability, self-healing, and recycling properties through dynamic covalent cross-linking. The mechanical properties of the elastomers were influenced by the functionality of the derivatives and the molecular weight of the polymer. The self-healing process was fast and the recycling process could be carried out by solution processing and hot pressing. The tensile properties of the pristine and healed samples were similar.

Encapsulating electron-deficient dyes into metal-organic capsules to achieve high reduction potentials

Jiayou Yuan et al.

Summary: In this work, a metal-organic capsule was assembled by incorporating electron-deficient dyes into electron-rich pseudo-cubic capsules, creating an efficient artificial enzyme-mimicking supramolecular system for photocatalytic reduction reactions. The confined space of the host facilitated intimate contact between the electron-deficient dyes and the electron-rich host walls, promoting photoinduced electron transfer. The study achieved high yields in a short reaction time, demonstrating potential applications in solar energy conversion and enzyme-mimicking catalysis.
