Association of self-reported bruxism with temporomandibular disorders - Northern Finland Birth Cohort (NFBC) 1966 study

Anne Ekman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the prevalence of self-reported bruxism and its association with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The data were collected from 1962 participants who completed a questionnaire regarding bruxism and TMD symptoms. The results show a high prevalence of self-reported bruxism among middle-aged adults, with significant associations between bruxism and TMD pain-related symptoms and diagnoses.

Standardised Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism

Daniele Manfredini et al.

Summary: This paper presents and describes a standardized tool for the assessment of bruxism (STAB), which aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of bruxism status, comorbid conditions, etiology, and consequences. The tool consists of two axes, including self-reported information, clinical assessment, and instrumental assessment. It includes 14 domains with a total of 66 items.

The bruxism screener (BruxScreen): Development, pilot testing and face validity

Frank Lobbezoo et al.

Summary: This study developed a bruxism screening tool (BruxScreen) for large-scale epidemiological research projects and dental practices, consisting of a questionnaire completed by patients and a clinical assessment form completed by dentists. After pilot testing and face validity assessment, the BruxScreen is deemed ready for more comprehensive psychometric testing in general dental settings.

Chairside risk assessment for first-onset temporomandibular disorders Result from the Orofacial Pain: Prospective Evaluation and Risk Assessment data set

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that people with psychological conditions, pain disorders, sleep disorders, or orofacial symptoms are at elevated risks of developing first-onset TMD. Additionally, the coexistence of conditions from multiple body systems increases the risk of developing TMD. Therefore, multisystem risk assessment and interprofessional collaborations are crucial in TMD prevention.

Sleep bruxism and temporomandibular disorders: A scoping review of the literature

Daniele Manfredini et al.

Summary: A scoping review of English-language literature was conducted to investigate the relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), highlighting the varying findings between questionnaire/self-report studies and instrumental studies on the association with TMD pain. Future research should consider SB as a multifaceted motor behavior that requires evaluation across a continuum spectrum.

Polymorphisms of the serotonin receptors genes in patients with bruxisnn: a systematic review

Camilla Porto Campello et al.

Summary: This study found that several SNPs of the 5-HT2A receptor gene may be associated with sleep bruxism, but no significant results were found in awake bruxism or sleep and awake bruxism groups. The genetic distinctions between different populations may explain these different outcomes.
