Summary: This paper proposes the concept of active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to overcome the capacity limitation of passive RISs in strong direct link scenarios. By integrating amplifiers into the elements, active RISs can amplify the reflected signals. The signal model of active RISs is developed and verified through experimental measurements, and the significant capacity gain they provide for wireless communications is analyzed. A joint transmit beamforming and reflect precoding scheme is proposed to maximize the sum-rate in an active RIS aided multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system. Simulation results show that active RISs can achieve a significant sum-rate gain of 130% in comparison to the limited 22% gain of passive RISs, thus overcoming the multiplicative fading effect.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to enhance network secure transmission. It formulates an energy-efficient secure transmission design problem with a probabilistic outage constraint. By leveraging the exponential distribution property of received signal power, stochastic resource allocation is transformed into a deterministic problem and solved iteratively using low complexity algorithms. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces computation time and improves energy efficiency compared to conventional methods.

Summary: This paper investigates a downlink cellular NOMA network with directional beamforming and an upper limit for user number in a NOMA group. Analyzing the performance for an arbitrary user in the network, the derived closed-form PDF of ordered channel gain is utilized to derive expressions for outage probability, conditional success probability, and ergodic data rate. Simulations show the accuracy and reasonableness of the analytical results, while also highlighting the impact of the upper limit for user number on performance gain in different SINR environments.

Summary: In this paper, the spectrum sharing problem in RIS-aided vehicular networks is investigated to enhance V2X applications. By relying on large-scale CSI, the QoS requirements of V2I and V2V communications are fulfilled despite the fast varying nature of some V2X channels. The optimization objective is to maximize the sum capacity of V2I links for high-rate content delivery and guarantee the reliability of V2V links for safety information exchange.

Summary: The paper introduces a new type of RIS, called active RIS, which enhances the incoming signal by incorporating active loads to each reflecting element, in contrast to conventional passive RIS systems. However, this amplification may unintentionally boost RIS-correlated noise, requiring optimization of the reflecting coefficient matrix at the RIS and receive beamforming at the receiver to strike a balance between maximizing received signal power and minimizing RIS-related noise.
