Changes in Cigarette Smoking and Vaping in Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic in the UK: Findings from Baseline and 12-Month Follow up of HEBECO Study

Dimitra Kale et al.

Summary: This study investigated changes in cigarette smoking and vaping among UK adults during the COVID-19 pandemic and factors associated with these changes. The findings showed that COVID-19 stimulated more interest in reducing or quitting cigarette smoking than vaping among the survey participants. Participants self-reported data on sociodemographics, COVID-19-related factors, and smoking/vaping characteristics over 12 months, and the study highlighted that motivation to quit smoking and being younger were associated with making a smoking quit attempt and smoking cessation.

Lockdown, bottoms up? Changes in adolescent substance use across the COVID-19 pandemic

Tara M. Dumas et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted adolescent substance use, with an increase in alcohol use, binge drinking, and cannabis use once stay-at-home orders were lifted. Graduates showed higher likelihood and frequency of substance use compared to current high school students, with more stability in their trajectories. Unexpectedly, there was a significant increase in current high school students' likelihood and frequency of e-cigarette use.

A vaping risks education program for school students: Evaluation of the solve mystery toolkit

Asha Hollis et al.

Summary: One in three grade 7 to 12 students in Canada have tried vaping, despite the associated risks such as nicotine addiction and impaired brain development. Additionally, 48% of youth believe occasional vaping poses little to no risk, despite the increased respiratory symptoms and potential association with COVID-19 diagnosis. An interactive educational program on vaping risks was developed and piloted, resulting in increased subjective knowledge about the health consequences of vaping among participating students.

A longitudinal study of change in substance use from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic in young adults

Marie-Pierre Sylvestre et al.

Summary: This study assessed the change in substance use among young adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and identified factors associated with the initiation/increase of use. The prevalence of cannabis and e-cigarette use increased during the pandemic. Individual-level analysis showed that many participants did not change their substance use patterns. Low education and living alone were associated with a higher risk of initiating/increasing substance use.

An Epidemic Supplanted by a Pandemic: Vaping-Related Illness and COVID-19

Yoo Mee Shin et al.

Summary: Before the COVID-19 pandemic, vaping-related illness was a major public health concern. Although the incidence of vaping-related illnesses decreased with the arrival of COVID-19, it should still be considered as a differential diagnosis for COVID-19 patients. This narrative review discusses vaping devices, the adverse health effects of vaping, the potential interplay between vaping and COVID-19, and identifies knowledge gaps in vaping that require further research.

Protecting children and adolescents against the risks of vaping

Nicholas Chadi et al.

Summary: Youth vaping poses significant risks to the health and safety of Canadian children and adolescents, including increased risk for tobacco and other substance use, mental health issues, pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, and unintentional injuries. Vaping should not be used as a smoking cessation tool for youth, and strategies similar to those used for tobacco cessation can be adapted to help youth quit vaping. Recommendations for community stakeholders and policymakers are provided.

Smokers' cognitive and behavioural reactions during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic: Findings from the 2020 ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey

Shannon Gravely et al.

Summary: This study found that although nearly half of smokers considered quitting smoking because of COVID-19, the majority did not change their smoking behavior. Smokers were more likely to try quitting or reducing smoking if they were more concerned about the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 related to smoking. Smokers in Australia were the least likely to reduce or attempt to quit smoking, possibly due to the significantly lower impact of COVID-19 during the early phase of the pandemic in that country.

Systematic Review of Electronic Cigarette Use (Vaping) and Mental Health Comorbidity Among Adolescents and Young Adults

Timothy D. Becker et al.

Summary: The prevalence of electronic cigarette use among adolescents and young adults has increased significantly over the past decade. While associations between traditional cigarette use and mental health problems are well-established, the relationship between EC use and mental health comorbidities remains unclear. Existing literature suggests that youth EC use is linked to greater mental health issues, particularly among adolescents, but well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to explore the long-term mental health consequences of EC use.
