Ultrathin MXene nanosheet-based TiO2/CdS heterostructure as a photoelectrochemical sensor for detection of CEA in human serum samples

Yantian Shi et al.

Summary: Developing highly accurate and ultrasensitive strategies is crucial for clinical measurements, especially in cancer biomarker detection. In this study, an ultrasensitive TiO2/MXene/CdS QDs heterostructure was synthesized as a photoelectrochemical immunosensor, utilizing the ultrathin MXene nanosheet to facilitate energy level matching and fast electron transfer. Incubating the TiO2/MX/CdS electrode with Cu2+ solution caused significant photocurrent quenching due to the formation of CuS and subsequent CuxS (x = 1, 2), reducing light absorption and increasing electron-hole recombination. The prepared biosensor exhibited a linearly increased photocurrent quenching percentage (Q%) with CEA concentration and a low detection limit of 0.24 fg/mL. Overall, this proposed strategy provides new opportunities for the clinical diagnosis of CEA and other tumor markers, offering excellent stability, high selectivity, and good reproducibility.

Photoelectrochemical aptasensing of tetracycline enabled by efficient photoanode: Integrating high visible light-harvesting Bi2S3 and metal-free g-C3N4 into Z-scheme heterojunction

Qian Liu et al.

Summary: The development of a reliable method for detecting tetracycline (TC) in fish is crucial for ensuring the safety of aquatic products and human health. In this study, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor with a high light-harvesting heterojunction of bismuth sulfide/graphitic carbon nitride (Bi2S3/g-C3N4) was fabricated for efficient TC detection. The Bi2S3/g-C3N4 exhibited enhanced photocurrent due to its increased light capture capability and low electron-hole recombination efficiency enabled by Z-scheme electron transfer. The fabricated aptasensor showed a wide linear range, low detection limit, good selectivity, and reproducibility, and its reliability was confirmed by comparison with the UPLC-MS/MS method.

Z-scheme Bi2S3-carbon nitride heterojunction photoanode activated efficient photoelectrochemical aptasensing of oxytetracycline and insights into the mechanism

Hang Zhang et al.

Summary: A photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on a novel Z-scheme heterojunction of bismuth sulfide-carbon nitride (Bi2S3-C3N4) was developed for sensitive and selective detection of oxytetracycline (OTC). The photocurrent intensity of the constructed Bi2S3-C3N4 heterojunction was significantly higher than that of pure Bi2S3, due to the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs by the Z-scheme route. The increased photocurrent in the presence of OTC was attributed to the oxidation by the generated holes, as confirmed by electron spin resonance technique.

Design of NiS@Ni3S2/CdS heterostructure with intimate contact interface for sensitive photoelectrochemical detection of lincomycin

Ruilong Zhang et al.

Summary: Due to their internal electric field effect and abundant photo-induced carriers, photoactive heterostructured materials can enhance the sensitivity of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor. In this study, a novel NiS@Ni3S2/CdS heterostructure composite is derived from Ni-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework (Ni-ZIF). PEC experiments demonstrate that the NiS@Ni3S2/CdS composite exhibits superior photocurrent response compared to NiS@Ni3S2 and CdS, attributed to the type II heterojunction and tightly connected interface which reduce carrier transport distance and facilitate electron-hole separation. Furthermore, a PEC biosensor based on aptamer/glutaraldehyde/chitosan/NiS@Ni3S2/CdS/ITO is developed, showing excellent sensitivity for Lin detection, wide linear range (0.0001 to 1.25 nM), and low detection limit (0.067 pM). The sensor also demonstrates good selectivity, repeatability, and stability in monitoring Lin in actual milk.

MOF-Based Hybrids for Solar Fuel Production

Ji-Won Yoon et al.

Summary: Solar fuel production methods like water splitting and CO2 reduction through sunlight-assisted catalytic reactions are attractive and sustainable, but single photocatalytic materials often fall short in meeting all the requirements. Hybridization with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) can address these limitations and lead to the design of high-performance photocatalysts, offering diverse possibilities for energy generation. MOF-derived hybrids inherit the advantages of MOFs and provide further options for enhancing solar fuel production.
