Dietary supplementation of synbiotic Leuconostoc mesenteroide B4 and dextran improves immune regulation and disease resistance of Penaeus vannamei against Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Mei-Ying Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of dietary supplementation of Leuconostoc mesenteroide B4 and its fermentate (dextran) on the immune response, intestinal morphology, disease resistance, and immune-related gene expression in white shrimp. The results showed that the addition of synbiotic Leuco. mesenteroides B4 and dextran can improve the growth performance, intestinal morphology and microbiome, regulation of immune genes and disease resistance against Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection in white shrimp. The research has significant implications for the aquaculture industry.

Summary: Fermented foods have health benefits due to probiotic bacteria or microproducts produced by bacterial fermentation. Prebiotics associated with L. mesenteroides-produced exopolysaccharides (EPS) show significant metabolic benefits. EPS-derived gut microbial short-chain fatty acids improve glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis, and alter gut microbial composition.

Identification of Shewanella putrefaciens as a novel pathogen of the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and histopathological analysis of diseased fish

Xinyu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reports the pathogenic effects of Shewanella putrefaciens in farmed largemouth bass in China. The isolate XX2021 was identified as S. putrefaciens and its virulence was found to be dependent on water temperature. Several virulent genes were screened and antibiotic resistance patterns were determined. The findings of this study have important implications for disease control strategies in aquaculture fish and prevention of disease outbreaks under low water temperatures.

Summary: The probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum HNU082 (Lp082) effectively improves ulcerative colitis (UC) by protecting the intestinal mucosal barrier, attenuating the inflammatory response, and regulating microbial imbalance. Lp082 achieves this therapeutic effect by optimizing the biological, chemical, mechanical, and immune barriers. This study provides support for the development of probiotic-based microbial products as an alternative treatment strategy for UC.
