Process optimization of nanosecond pulsed packed-bed discharge plasma for SF6 degradation based on response surface methodology

Nan Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a nanosecond pulsed packed-bed discharge (PBD) plasma was developed to degrade SF6 under different dilution gases. Introducing the packing material changed the discharge form, resulting in enhanced local electric field strength and SF6 degradation performance. The SF6/Ar system showed higher efficiency in degrading SF6 due to significantly higher electron energy and rate coefficient compared to SF6/N2 or SF6/air system. Additionally, a response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken design was used to optimize key process parameters and assess their contribution to SF6 degradation. The proposed optimization model demonstrated a good correlation between predicted and experimental results, achieving an energy yield of approximately 75.3 g/kWh with nearly complete degradation. This work is expected to provide an efficient and energy-saving plasma technique for SF6 degradation.

Porous aromatic frameworks as HF resistant adsorbents for SF6 separation at elevated pressure

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: The exploration of removal processes for sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) emission through adsorptive separation technology has been driven by public concerns. Using task-specific porous materials, the capture of SF6 can achieve lower energy consumption and a reduced carbon footprint. In this study, four HF resistant porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-XJTU-1 to PAF-XJTU-4) with strong C-C linkage were prepared for the separation of SF6 in semiconductor etching exhaust. Experimental results and theoretical studies confirmed the efficient capture of SF6 in PAF-XJTUs.

Atmospheric Observation of Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases around Four Chemical Plants in China

Tengfei Ma et al.

Summary: Due to concerns over global warming potential and increasing atmospheric concentrations of F-gases, this study conducted atmospheric observations around chemical plants in China. The results showed higher concentrations of HFCs and PFCs compared to SF6 and NF3. The observed F-gases with larger up-down differences and enhanced ratios suggest higher emissions during production, by-products, and usage processes. The number of F-gas species emitted varied among the plants, with usage processes contributing significantly. While the emitted F-gases did not cause toxicity to humans, they had significant climate impacts.

Summary: SF6 gas, the strongest greenhouse gas, is widely used in many occasions, but its use is restricted due to environmental concerns. This study proposes the idea of degrading retired SF6 gas using thermal plasma, and a prototype is built and tested. The results show that under suitable reaction conditions, SF6 can be efficiently destroyed using thermal plasma.

Declining, seasonal-varying emissions of sulfur hexafluoride from the United States

Lei Hu et al.

Summary: This study estimates SF6 emissions from the United States between 2007 and 2018 using NOAA's measurements. The results show a significant decline in US SF6 emissions, consistent with the national inventory submitted by the US Environmental Protection Agency. However, the emissions derived from atmospheric observations are higher than the national inventory and lower than the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research inventory. The study also suggests higher SF6 emissions in winter, potentially due to increased maintenance and leakage through aging seals.

Plasma-Catalytic Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation over a Supported Cu Cluster Catalyst: Insights into the Reaction Mechanism

Zhaolun Cui et al.

Summary: Plasma-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation for methanol production was studied using a combination of experimental and computational methods. Results showed a synergistic effect between the Cu/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst and CO2/H2 plasma, with enhanced methanol selectivity achieved through the addition of H2O. Computational calculations revealed the bifunctional effect of Cu-13/gamma-Al2O3 interface sites in activating CO2 molecules and promoting hydrogenation of key intermediates. This study provides new insights into the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation through plasma catalysis, and offers inspiration for the conversion of other small molecules using supported-metal clusters.

Dry reforming of methane by microsecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma: Optimizing the reactor structures

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of reactor structures on the plasma-assisted dry reforming of CH4 process and finds that a multi-stage or foil external electrode and negative polar discharge can promote the conversions of reactants and the yields of syngas. The results show that lower power input and heat insulation measures can lead to higher conversions, yields, and energy conversion efficiencies. Additionally, packing materials into the reactor can further promote the conversion of CH4, but has limited effect on the conversion of CO2.

SF6 catalytic degradation in a γ-Al2O3 packed bed plasma system: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Zhaolun Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of packing size and surface properties of gamma-Al2O3 pellets on the degradation of SF6 in a packed bed dielectric barrier discharge system. The results show that decreasing packing size improves the degradation performance at low input powers, but decreases efficiency with excessively small packing pellets. Lowering the packing size promotes the generation of SO2 and reduces the yields of S-O-F products. After discharge, the pellet surface becomes smoother with the appearance of S and F elements. SF6 is likely to be adsorbed at the Al-III site over the gamma-Al2O3(110) surface, and it is more easily decomposed than in the gas phase.
