Mapping human brain pathways: challenges and opportunities in the integration of scales

Summary: The human brain is made up of complex neural pathways, and diffusion magnetic resonance (MR) tractography uses the principle of diffusion to reconstruct these pathways. However, this technique can produce biologically implausible pathways, especially in areas where multiple fibers cross. This review focuses on potential mis-connections in two cortico-cortical association pathways and discusses the need for new integrative approaches to trace human brain pathways.
