Plastics, prawns, and patterns: Microplastic loadings in Nephrops norvegicus and surrounding habitat in the North East Atlantic

Summary: This study assessed the abundance of microplastics (MPs) in commercially important seafood species, specifically the Nephrops norvegicus, in the North East Atlantic. The results showed that the MP abundances, size, shape, and polymer type in N. norvegicus were similar to those found in the surrounding environment samples. The level of MP contamination in N. norvegicus was relatively low compared to other regional studies, and larger organisms contained a lower abundance of MPs, indicating no accumulation of MPs in N. norvegicus.

Biodegradability of novel high Tg poly(isosorbide-co-1,6-hexanediol) oxalate polyester in soil and marine environments

Summary: In order to reduce plastic accumulation in the environment, the interest in biodegradable plastics is growing in the market. A novel fully renewable poly(isosorbide-co-diol) oxalate (PISOX-diol) copolyester with high glass transition temperature (T-g) and fast biodegradability has been developed. The biodegradability of a representative copolyester, poly(isosorbide-co-1,6-hexanediol) oxalate (PISOX-HDO), was evaluated in soil and marine environment. The results showed that PISOX-HDO mineralized faster than cellulose and the non-enzymatic hydrolysis played a crucial role in the biodegradation mechanism. The combination of high T-g and fast biodegradability makes PISOX-HDO copolyester ideal for short term applications.

Preliminary results on the occurrence and anatomical distribution of microplastics in wild populations of Nephrops norvegicus from the Adriatic Sea

Individual sex did not affect the level of retained MPs.

pH-Stat Titration: A Rapid Assay for Enzymatic Degradability of Bio-Based Polymers

An improved pH Stat titration assay has been proposed as a rapid and reliable method to determine the biodegradability of polymers under environmental conditions.
