Realization of superconducting transmon qubits based on topological insulator nanowires

Xiaopei Sun et al.

Summary: A topological-insulator-nanowire-based transmon qubit was constructed and its strong coupling to a coplanar waveguide resonator was demonstrated. Flux-tunable spectrum and Rabi oscillations with a qubit lifetime T-1 of approximately 0.5 μs were observed. This hybrid platform, combining topological materials and quantum electrodynamic circuits, can be used to study physical properties such as Majorana zero modes in topological quantum circuits.

Local and Nonlocal Transport Spectroscopy in Planar Josephson Junctions

A. Banerjee et al.

Summary: We report simultaneous measurements of local and nonlocal transport spectroscopy in a planar Josephson junction using an InAs-Al hybrid two-dimensional heterostructure. Local and nonlocal tunneling conductances were measured as a function of magnetic field, phase difference, and carrier density using quantum point contacts at the junction ends. The reopening of a gap in both local and nonlocal tunneling spectra was observed with changes in magnetic field, and for specific junction densities, this reopening was accompanied by zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCPs) in the local conductances. The strong end-to-end correlation of gap reopening suggests a topological phase transition, while the weak correlation of local ZBCPs indicates different origins.

Hole-type superconducting gatemon qubit based on Ge/Si core/shell nanowires

Enna Zhuo et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the construction of superconducting gatemon qubits on hole-type Ge/Si core/shell nanowires based on superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor Josephson junctions. The qubit frequency can be set by controlling the diffusion of Al in the nanowire via thermal annealing and fine tuning of a gate voltage. Rabi oscillation with an energy relaxation time T-1 of around 180 ns and an average decoherence time T'(2) of about 15 ns was observed on the qubit. The gate voltage dependence of both T-1 and T'(2) was investigated. This hole-type superconducting gatemon qubit has potential applications in exploring quantum coherence phenomena and Majorana physics in Ge-based quantum devices.

Majorana-like Coulomb spectroscopy in the absence of zero-bias peaks

Marco Valentini et al.

Summary: Hybrid semiconductor-superconductor devices have great potential for realizing topological quantum computing with Majorana zero modes. However, the detection of Majorana modes based on either tunnelling or Coulomb blockade spectroscopy is still disputable. In this study, we propose an experimental protocol that allows us to perform both types of measurement on the same hybrid island, effectively reducing ambiguities in Majorana detections.

Large zero bias peaks and dips in a four-terminal thin InAs-Al nanowire device

Huading Song et al.

Summary: We report electron transport studies of a thin InAs-Al hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowire device using a four-terminal design. Thinner InAs nanowire is expected to reach fewer subband regime. Large zero bias peaks (ZBPs) in differential conductance were found using tunneling spectroscopy. A magnetic-field-driven transition between a zero bias peak and a zero bias dip was observed at specific gate voltage settings.

Parametric exploration of zero-energy modes in three-terminal InSb-Al nanowire devices

Ji-Yin Wang et al.

Summary: By using radio-frequency reflectometry, three-terminal InSb-Al nanowire devices were studied systematically, and tunneling spectroscopy measurements on both ends were conducted to construct energy diagrams. Comparing the diagrams from both ends helped to rule out states that do not coexist simultaneously, reducing the time needed to identify a potential topological phase.

Josephson radiation patterns in underdamped topological Josephson junctions

Yuejian Zhang et al.

Summary: Josephson radiation is a useful signature for detecting Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors. The quantum dynamics of the Majorana two-level system induce oscillatory patterns in the Josephson emission spectra, which can be well described by Bessel functions. These Bessel radiation patterns exist for a wide range of junction parameters, as verified by numerical simulations.

Zero-bias peaks at zero magnetic field in ferromagnetic hybrid nanowires

Summary: Hybrid quantum materials can create quantum phases that do not exist in nature, such as a one-dimensional topological superconductor with Majorana states bound to its ends by coupling a semiconductor nanowire to a superconductor in the presence of a strong magnetic field. However, applied magnetic fields are detrimental to superconductivity and constrain device layout, components, materials, fabrication, and operation.

Nontopological zero-bias peaks in full-shell nanowires induced by flux-tunable Andreev states

Marco Valentini et al.

Summary: The presence of subgap states in a semiconducting nanowire fully wrapped by a superconducting shell is influenced by the junction region in tunneling spectroscopy measurements, rather than the nanowire itself. Quantum dots formed in the junction region may host Andreev levels in the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov regime, leading to intricate magnetic field dependence of the Andreev levels. This could result in zero-bias peaks that are easily misinterpreted as originating from Majorana zero modes, but are actually unrelated to topological superconductivity.

Closing of the induced gap in a hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire

D. Puglia et al.

Summary: In this study, conductance-matrix measurements were conducted in long, three-terminal hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowires to investigate a magnetic-field-driven, topological quantum phase transition. By analyzing nonlocal conductance, the closure of the excitation gap in the bulk of the semiconductor was identified before the appearance of zero-bias peaks, ruling out spurious gap-closure signatures from localized states. It was observed that after the gap closes, nonlocal signals and zero-bias peaks fluctuated strongly at both ends, which was inconsistent with a simple picture of clean topological superconductivity.

Disorder effects on Majorana zero modes: Kitaev chain versus semiconductor nanowire

Haining Pan et al.

Summary: Majorana zero modes in a superconductor-semiconductor nanowire have been extensively studied, with disorder presenting a serious obstacle to definitive observation of topological Majorana bound states. Comparison of the effects of disorder in a Kitaev chain with that in a nanowire shows a nonuniversal impact on both systems. While the vanishing and strong disorder regimes exhibit universal behavior, the experimentally relevant intermediate disorder regime is nonuniversal with details dependent on the specific disorder realization in the system.
