Asymmetrically coordinated cobalt single atom on carbon nitride for highly selective photocatalytic oxidation of CH4 to CH3OH

Jie Ding et al.

Summary: By breaking the structural symmetry of the single atomic active site, the photocatalytic water oxidation pathway can be tuned for selective oxidation of CH4 to CH3OH in aqueous solution. The water oxidation ability and its influence on photocatalytic oxidation of CH4 over symmetrically coordinated cobalt single atom (Co-4N) and asymmetrically coordinated cobalt single atom (Co-C2N2) photocatalysts on carbon nitride were systematically investigated. It was found that the AC-Co1/PCNKOH photocatalyst exhibited a super selectivity of 87.22% for CH4 oxidation to CH3OH, while the SC-Co1/PCN catalyst only achieved 45%. Furthermore, AC-Co1/PCNKOH showed a CH4 conversion of 2.42% and a CH3OH yield of 2.11%. In-depth analysis revealed that AC-Co1/PCNKOH possessed the desired electronic configuration for single-electron transfer water oxidation reaction during photocatalysis, leading to significantly enhanced selectivity for CH4 oxidation to CH3OH under illumination.

Tellurium Nanosphere/Hematite Hybrid Thin Films with Enhanced Light Absorption for Efficient Photocatalysis

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This paper designs and demonstrates plasmonic-semiconductor hybrid nanoscale films consisting of Fe2O3 thin films and Te nanospheres. It proves that Te clusters have an electric near-field enhancement effect in a broad UV-vis-NIR spectrum, facilitating light absorption and charge separation. By modifying the film surface with Te clusters, the photocurrent density can be significantly enhanced, and the solar energy conversion efficiency can be improved.

High Photoreactivity on a Reconstructed Anatase TiO2(001) Surface Predicted by Ab Initio Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics

Youyou Tu et al.

Summary: In this study, it is revealed that the ridge structure on the anatase TiO2(001)-(4 x 1) surface is the photoreactive site for hole trapping. Low-coverage CH3OH adsorption destroys the ridge structure and suppresses its high photoreactivity, but increasing CH3OH coverage and forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds can restore the ridge structure and its high photoreactivity. The hole trapping dynamics is strongly coherent with intermolecular proton transfer.

ZnO with Controllable Oxygen Vacancies for Photocatalytic Nitrogen Oxide Removal

Reshalaiti Hailili et al.

Summary: Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is a promising method for air purification by removing nitrogen oxide (NO) pollutants. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic treatment is hampered by sluggish carrier separation, catalyst deactivation, and incomplete oxidation. In this study, various ZnO structures with deliberate surface defect constructions were fabricated to address these issues. The results showed that ZnO rich in oxygen vacancies exhibited significantly enhanced NO removal efficiency and fewer toxic byproducts compared to pristine and vacancy-poor ZnO. Furthermore, the surface defects promoted not only carrier separation but also molecular oxygen activation, resulting in the generation of strong oxidant superoxide radicals and improved efficiency. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the successful adsorption and activation of NO and molecular oxygen on the defective surface, further contributing to the enhanced NO conversions.
