Prediction of acid mine drainage: Where we are

Abdellatif Elghali et al.

Summary: The mining and ore processing of sulfide-bearing deposits produce large volumes of waste rock and tailings. The acid generation potential of mine waste is determined by the occurrence of sulfides and carbonates. Predicting mine drainage formation is crucial for the mining industry to assess reclamation costs and is typically done through laboratory and field tests.

Waste rock reprocessing to enhance the sustainability of phosphate reserves: A critical review

Hicham Amar et al.

Summary: The demand for phosphate continues to grow, leading to the depletion of high-grade ore resources and necessitating the exploitation and beneficiation of low-grade phosphate ores and phosphate mine waste rock (PMWR). This review discusses the recent advances in beneficiation technologies for reprocessing PMWR, including sorting, flotation, gravity separation, ore sorting, magnetic, electrostatic, and thermal separation, and hydrometallurgical methods. The findings suggest that ore sorting, gravity separation, flotation, and calcination are suitable methods for recovering phosphate from PMWR.

Characterizations and potential recovery pathways of phosphate mines waste rocks

Amine el Mahdi Safhi et al.

Summary: The steady increase in phosphate ore production, driven by high demand in agriculture and medicine, generates a significant amount of waste rocks. This study investigates the characteristics of phosphate mine waste rocks (PMWR) in Benguerir, Morocco, with the aim of recycling these stockpiles. Sensor-based ore sorting is proposed as a method for separating different lithologies. The physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the waste rocks are analyzed, and their potential uses for recycling or upcycling are explored. The study found that indured phosphate can be recovered using ore sorting, and residual phosphate can be extracted using beneficiation methods. Certain lithologies, such as flintstone, phosphated flintstone, and dolomitic limestone, have properties suitable for producing concrete. Silexite and siliceous marls, with low density, can be used as lightweight aggregates for non-structural concrete blocks. Tender marls show promise as alternative binders or supplementary cementitious materials. The valorization of PMWR as road construction materials has been proven, but further research is recommended after the recovery of phosphate and other lithologies through ore sorting. The recycling of these by-products can reduce natural resource consumption in civil engineering and address environmental issues.

Feasibility of reprocessing gold tailings: Integrated management approach for the control of contaminated neutral mine drainage

Yassine Ait-khouia et al.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of desulfurization by flotation as a sustainable tailings management approach for preventing contaminated neutral drainage from sulfide ore processing. Through experimental design and response surface methodology, the optimal desulfurization conditions were determined and the release of contaminants from the tailings was evaluated using mineralogical and chemical analyses.

Extensions to the Theory of Sampling 1. The extended Gy's formula, the segregation paradox and the fundamental sampling uncertainty (FSU)

Bo Svensmark

Summary: The Theory of Sampling by Pierre Gy is a comprehensive theory that explains sampling errors and how to obtain a representative sample. While Gy's formula for predicting the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) may be challenging to use in practice, an extended formula derived from Gy's definition of constitutional heterogeneity provides an exact method for estimating FSE for various particulate materials. This extended formula allows for accurate prediction of FSE for complex materials with multiple particle classes.

Environmental desulfurization of mine wastes using various mineral processing techniques: Recent advances and opportunities

Yassine Ait-Khouia et al.

Summary: Management of mine wastes is a growing environmental concern worldwide, prompting the need for efficient and clean techniques to handle wastes containing acid-forming minerals. Physical separation techniques, underutilized in mine waste management but offering potential for valuable mineral enrichment, can achieve similar results as flotation through methods based on mineral properties. These techniques may provide a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for mine waste management.

Phosphate Rocks: A Review of Sedimentary and Igneous Occurrences in Morocco

Radouan El Bamiki et al.

Summary: Phosphate rocks are essential for agriculture and are also being explored as a potential source of rare earth elements. Morocco has the largest deposits of sedimentary phosphate rocks in the world, with underexplored potential for igneous phosphate ores. The paper summarizes the geological features, driving processes, and global reserve situation of phosphate rocks, highlighting knowledge gaps and the need for further research in Moroccan phosphates.

Geochemical behaviour of benign desulphurised waste rocks for mine drainage control and sustainable management

Hicham Amar et al.

Summary: Large volumes of waste rock are generated in open-pit mines, characterized by high anisotropy. Mineralogical investigations defined the diameter of physical locking of sulphides allowing the waste rock to be separated into reactive fine and inert coarse fractions. Environmental desulphurisation of the reactive fine fraction effectively reduces contamination risk.
