Changes in soil hydrodynamic parameters during intermittent rainfall following tillage

F. Todisco et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in soil hydrodynamic properties after soil tillage through rainfall simulation trials in central Italy. The experiments aimed to build a representative database of natural situations. The collected data were used to determine the saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, sorptivity, and flow-weighted mean pore size. The results showed a reduction in both sorptivity and hydraulic conductivity due to wetting and drying cycles, with the decrease in hydraulic conductivity being related to the energy dissipated at the soil surface.

Semi-supervised deep learning and low-cost cameras for the semantic segmentation of natural images in viticulture

A. Casado-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study proposes a deep learning-based method for semantic segmentation of natural images acquired by low-cost cameras, and improves the segmentation accuracy through three semi-supervised learning methods. Different network architectures achieved the highest accuracy on different classes. Further discussions are presented on the effects of manual annotation on accuracy and time requirements.

A high-resolution physical modelling approach to assess runoff and soil erosion in vineyards under different soil managements

Eugenio Straffelini et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess runoff and soil erosion processes in vineyards under four different soil managements. The results show that the practice of inter-row weeding once a year (ST) has a better performance in mitigating soil erosion, similar to the practice of attracting insects with nectariferous species (NF). Furthermore, the negative role of wheel tracks as preferential pathways for surface runoff and sediment is highlighted. In comparison, continuous tillage (CT) exacerbates soil erosion.

An RGB-D multi-view perspective for autonomous agricultural robots

Fabio Vulpi et al.

Summary: This paper describes the integration and development of a cost-effective multi-view RGB-D device for sensing and modeling of agricultural environments. The system, featuring multiple sensors and localization devices, aims to provide multi-channel information of the surveyed scene to build a multi-view 3D geo-referenced map of crops. Experimental results from a commercial vineyard demonstrate the effectiveness of the system for precision agriculture applications, including crop health monitoring and support for autonomous driving.

Novel Measurements and Features for the Characterization of Soil Surface Roughness

Antonio Leanza et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an innovative sensing approach using a depth camera for contactless measurements to evaluate the Soil Surface Roughness (SSR) and investigates novel features for a statistical description of SSR with minimal parameters. The methods were validated in an experimental campaign on a vineyard plot. This research is important for various applications including soil erosion prediction, autonomous vehicle navigation, and controlled traffic farming.

The role of cover crops in the loss of protected and non-protected soil organic carbon fractions due to water erosion in a Mediterranean olive grove

M. Lopez-Vicente et al.

Summary: The study showed that planting temporary cover crops in olive groves can reduce soil erosion, increase soil organic carbon fractions, especially the protected fraction. However, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the preferential loss of organic carbon fractions in olive groves, highlighting the need for further research and solutions.
