Au(I)-Catalyzed Formal Intermolecular Carbene Insertion into Vinylic C(sp2)-H Bonds and Allylic C(sp3)-H Bonds

Xiao-Yuan Cui et al.

Summary: We report on a metal-catalyzed formal intermolecular carbene insertion reaction into the vinylic C(sp(2))-H bond of alkenes, with Au(I) catalyst proving to be the most efficient among the screened metal catalysts. This reaction provides a facile method to access C4-alkenyl isochromanones and isoquinolinones from corresponding diazo reagents and alpha-methylstyrenes, with moderate to good yields, and excellent chemoselectivity. Mechanistic studies suggest the existence of two possible reaction pathways: nucleophilic attack-selective elimination by the gold-carbenoid and cyclopropanation-ring-opening-olefin isomerization process. The structure of the diazo reagents has a significant impact, as diazo(thio)oxindoles react with alpha-methylstyrenes via formal allylic C(sp(3))-H insertion to afford 3-allyl(thio)oxindoles.

Palladium-Catalyzed [3+2] Annulation of Aromatic Amides with Maleimides through Dual C-H Activation

Gouranga Naskar et al.

Summary: A palladium-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of substituted aromatic amides with maleimides is described, providing tricyclic heterocyclic molecules in good to moderate yields through weak carbonyl chelation. The reaction proceeds via a dual C-H bond activation, first selectively at the benzylic position and then at the meta position, resulting in a five-membered cyclic ring. The use of external ligand Ac-Gly-OH is crucial for the success of this protocol. A plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed for the [3 + 2] annulation reaction.

Generation and Utility of Cyclic Dienyl Gold Carbene Intermediates

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The exploration of intermediates for selective cycloadditions in the synthesis of fused and bridged-ring systems is of great interest. A concise strategy for the catalytic generation of cyclic dienyl gold carbene species via a gold-promoted diazo-enyne carbocyclization process is presented. The resulting carbene intermediates undergo cycloadditions with different dipolarophiles, leading to a diverse array of fused and bridged skeletons with high selectivity. This method provides a tool for accessing ring systems with complexity and diversity, complementing existing protocols relying on open-chained vinylcarbene species.

Ligand-Enabled [3+2] Annulation of Aromatic Acids with Maleimides by C(sp3)-H and C(sp2)-H Bond Activation

Gouranga Naskar et al.

Summary: This paper describes a palladium-catalyzed [3+2] annulation reaction of substituted benzoic acids with maleimides, leading to tricyclic heterocyclic molecules with a free carboxylic group in a highly atom- and step-economical manner. The reaction involves dual C-H bond activation, including C(sp(3))-H activation at the benzylic position and C(sp(2))-H bond activation at the meta position of substituted aromatics. The success of this protocol relies on the presence of an external ligand, MPAA. Additionally, decarboxylation and esterification of the free carboxylic acid group in the observed products were conducted.

Ze-Le Chen et al.

Summary: A site-selective cyclopropanation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-borane complexes via photochemical carbene transfer reactions is reported in this study. The approach can also be extended to the difunctionalization of NHC-boranes through cyclopropanation and the B-H insertion reaction. Further investigations on photochemical continuous-flow applications and synthetic transformations demonstrate the utility of the method. Theoretical calculations and control experiments were conducted to explain the observed selectivity.
