Enhancement of struvite generation and anti-fouling in an electro-AnMBR with Mg anode-MF membrane module

Yuhan Zhang et al.

Summary: An electrochemical AnMBR with a Mg anode-membrane module showed good performance in mitigating membrane fouling and recovering nutrients during sewage treatment. The application of an electric field reduced membrane fouling by up to 30% and improved water permeability. Additionally, the electrochemical reactions inhibited anaerobic acidification and allowed for the recovery of NH4+ and PO43- as struvite deposits.

Biomass generation and heterologous isoprenoid milking from engineered microalgae grown in anaerobic membrane bioreactor effluent

Barbara Bastos de Freitas et al.

Summary: Using anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) for wastewater treatment is more sustainable than using aerobic reactors. The effluent from AnMBR consists of a mixed gas stream of methane and carbon dioxide, as well as waters containing ammonia (N) and phosphate (P). This study investigates the use of engineered Chlamydomonas reinhardtii algae to grow directly in AnMBR effluent with CO2 concentrations found in AnMBR off-gas. The results demonstrate that the engineered strain can thrive in non-sterile effluent, remove N and P to meet discharge or reuse limits, and tolerate extreme outdoor environmental conditions.

Pilot plant demonstration of temperature impacts on the methanogenic performance and membrane fouling control of the anaerobic membrane bioreactor in treating real municipal wastewater

Chao Rong et al.

Summary: The study found that at low temperatures, methane production decreased and dissolved methane increased, leading to a reduction in methanogenic performance. The membrane rejection can offset the deteriorated anaerobic digestion, ensuring stable COD removal efficiency. However, at low temperatures, the increased microbial products and residual inorganic foulants can aggravate membrane fouling.

Virus removal during sewage treatment by anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR): The role of membrane fouling

Jinfan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of membrane fouling in virus removal during sewage treatment using AnMBR, revealing that virus removal efficiency is significantly correlated with transmembrane pressure, especially in the rapid fouling stage. The primary rejection mechanism of virus by membrane was found to be virus adsorption onto membrane in the slow fouling stage, while the sieving effect was dominant in the rapid fouling stage. This research provides operation strategies to achieve enhanced virus removal and high permeate flux by regulating the membrane fouling process.

Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) Production and Recovery from Chicken Manure Using a High-Solid Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR)

Dong Min Yin et al.

Summary: Acidogenic fermentation of chicken manure for production and recovery of volatile fatty acids is a promising waste-to-value approach. This study found that a high VFA yield can be achieved without pH control and under high organic loading rates, and enhanced hydrolysis and acidogenesis activities can be achieved at weak alkaline conditions. Long-term fermentation and filtration experiments showed that the AnMBR of chicken manure is a feasible and promising process for VFA production and recovery.

Summary: This study demonstrates that electrochemical generation of iron is a viable alternative to the use of iron salts in wastewater treatment. The use of electrochemical iron significantly reduces sulfide concentration and membrane fouling, while increasing removal efficiencies of various pollutants. The economic analysis shows that electrochemical iron is cost-effective compared to the conventional method of using iron salts.

Quantifying and Characterizing Sulfide Oxidation to Inform Operation of Electrochemical Sulfur Recovery from Wastewater

Xiaohan Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rate-limiting steps, reaction barriers, and performance of aqueous electrochemical sulfide oxidation. The findings show that indirect oxidation outperforms direct oxidation in terms of sulfide removal efficiency and sulfate production efficiency. Thiosulfate oxidation is identified as the rate-limiting step, and elemental sulfur deposition on the electrode is confirmed as the major barrier for mass transfer. These insights can guide future process optimization and the treatment of sulfide-containing wastewaters.
