Forecasting quantities of critical raw materials in obsolete feature and smart phones in Greece: A path to circular economy

Eleni Kastanaki et al.

Summary: Mobile phone waste is increasing due to the short lifetime and high ownership. This study estimates the quantities of obsolete mobile phones in Greece from 1995 to 2035 and identifies the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) and Precious Metals (PMs) embedded in them. The findings suggest that efficient recycling of obsolete phones can meet the demand for key metals in new smartphones for more than a decade, highlighting the importance of managing valuable e-waste.

Effect of Acid Leaching Pre-Treatment on Gold Extraction from Printed Circuit Boards of Spent Mobile Phones

Nicolo Maria Ippolito et al.

Summary: The study explored the effectiveness of a preliminary acid leaching process for recovering gold from spent mobile phone printed circuit boards. Two hydrometallurgical routes were tested to recover copper first to prevent competition with gold in the subsequent thiourea leaching. The recovery rates of copper and gold varied depending on the route and operational parameters.
