Trends in Prescription Opioid and Nonopioid Analgesic Use by Race, 1996-2017

Summary: Identifying racial differences in trends in prescription opioid use is important for addressing the opioid epidemic. This study found that non-Hispanic Whites had the highest prevalence of prescription opioid use, followed by non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics. Over time, prescription opioid use increased among all racial and ethnic groups, displacing nonopioid analgesic use. Although prescription opioid use is often associated with Whites, a significant proportion of the Black population may also be at risk. Lower prescription opioid use among Hispanics may be protective against misuse but could also represent undertreatment.

Summary: This study examines the trends of opioid, stimulant, and benzodiazepine prescription drug misuse in the United States in recent years, and finds that age and race/ethnicity are important factors in influencing misuse. The misuse rates have declined among younger age groups, but there have been limited changes in adults aged 35 and older and in non-opioid misuse.

The results show equal misuse rates among the two groups, but significant variations in risk/protective factors. Therefore, interventions aimed at preventing misuse should be targeted equally at both groups and tailored based on unique risk profiles.
