Estimation of genetic parameters and single-step genome-wide association studies for milk urea nitrogen in Holstein cattle

Longgang Ma et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for milk urea nitrogen (MUN) in Holstein cattle and identify candidate genes associated with MUN using single-step GWAS. Phenotypic data from 24,435 Holstein cows were collected, and 2,029 cows were genotyped using the Illumina 150K Bo-vine Bead Chip. MUN showed low heritability and repeatability, and its genetic correlations with other traits were positive, except for somatic cell score (SCS) which had a negative correlation.

Two Novel Homozygous HPS6 Mutations (Double Mutant) Identified by Whole-Exome Sequencing in a Saudi Consanguineous Family Suspected for Oculocutaneous Albinism

Sajjad Karim et al.

Summary: Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a genetic disorder characterized by low or missing pigmentation in the eyes, hair, and skin. This study identified novel homozygous mutations in the HPS6 gene in a Saudi family, leading to a diagnosis of OCA. Protein-based structural analysis showed significant impacts of the mutations on the protein structure.

Characterization of runs of homozygosity, heterozygosity-enriched regions, and population structure in cattle populations selected for different breeding goals

Henrique Alberto Mulim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the population structure and identified the runs of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity-enriched regions (HER) in 16 cattle populations. The results showed population-specific distribution and patterns of ROH and HER, indicating different selection processes or genetic processes among different breeds. The study also revealed candidate genes related to melanogenesis, prolactin signaling, and calcium signaling pathways in the identified homozygosity islands. Additionally, the analysis with whole-genome sequence data uncovered novel regions not captured by SNP panel data.

Genome-Wide Estimates of Runs of Homozygosity, Heterozygosity, and Genetic Load in Two Chinese Indigenous Goat Breeds

Guixin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ROH and ROHet patterns of Guangfeng and Ganxi goats from Jiangxi Province, China. It found that Guangfeng goats have higher genetic variability while Ganxi goats have a higher degree of inbreeding. Damaging alleles were found to be enriched in long ROHs, particularly in Guangfeng goats. Genes related to fecundity, growth, and environmental adaptation were identified in the ROH hotspots of these goats. The study also identified a shared ROH hotspot across global goat breeds and a ROHet hotspot containing genes associated with embryonic development in domestic goat breeds worldwide, suggesting long-term balancing selection. These findings have implications for breeding and conservation programs for Jiangxi goat breeds and contribute to our understanding of the adaptive evolution of goats.

Runs of Homozygosity Uncover Potential Functional-Altering Mutation Associated With Body Weight and Length in Two Duroc Pig Lines

Xiaopeng Wang et al.

Summary: Runs of homozygosity (ROH) were analyzed using GeneSeek Porcine 50K SNP Chip data of American and Canadian Duroc pigs. Differences in genetic differentiation, diversity, and inbreeding levels were observed between the two populations. ROH hotspots revealed candidate genes related to growth, sperm, and muscle development. Population-specific ROHs suggested different selective pressures on female reproduction and immunity. A missense mutation in the growth and fat deposition-related supergene region was identified. This study enhances our understanding of ROH patterns in Duroc pigs and provides valuable information for genetic improvement.

Assessment and Distribution of Runs of Homozygosity in Horse Breeds Representing Different Utility Types

Tomasz Szmatola et al.

Summary: This study examined the distribution of runs of homozygosity (ROH) in six different horse breeds, and found differences in the length, quantity, and frequency of ROH between breeds. The study also identified ROH islands, which may represent signals of recent selection events, and found several genes involved in important horse breed characteristics. The results can be used for further research in identifying markers unique to specific horse breed characteristics.

Using Pregnancy-Associated Glycoproteins (PAGs) to Improve Reproductive Management: From Dairy Cows to Other Dairy Livestock

Olimpia Barbato et al.

Summary: Pregnancy loss is a significant issue in dairy animals, particularly cattle, impacting farm productivity and profitability. The use of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) as a diagnostic tool to detect successful and unsuccessful pregnancies has the potential to reduce economic damage caused by pregnancy loss. This review provides an overview of PAGs' function, pregnancy profile, and their use in reproductive management in bovine and other dairy livestock. Early detection of pregnancy status and prediction of pregnancy failure can influence farm management decisions.

Transcriptional regulation of milk fat synthesis in dairy cattle

Zhichen Tian et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of China's economy and dairy industry, the requirement for high-quality milk is increasing. Milk fat, an important indicator of milk quality, is synthesized through complex mechanisms involving enzymes, proteins, and regulatory factors. This paper reviews recent progress in understanding the transcriptional regulation of milk fat synthesis, with a focus on de novo synthesis, fatty acid uptake, triglyceride formation, and the role of noncoding RNA. It provides valuable insights for future research on milk fat derived from dairy cows.

Novel mutations in the Myo5a gene cause a dilute coat color phenotype in mice

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: The dilute coat color phenotype in C57BL/6 mice is likely caused by novel mutations in the Myo5a gene, resulting in dysfunctional proteins and deficient melanosome transport. This study sheds light on the molecular mechanism underlying pigmentation in mice and demonstrates a typical case of deciphering phenotypic variation through genomic analyses and functional work.
