Twitter mobility dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic: A case study of London

Chen Zhong et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected people's lifestyles and travel behaviors with potential long-lasting impacts. A monitoring tool capable of tracking changes in mobility patterns is crucial for controlling the virus, predicting travel demand, and facilitating economic recovery. This study proposes Twitter mobility indices to analyze and visualize travel and activity pattern changes in London. Using over 2.3 million geotagged tweets from January 2019 to February 2021, daily trips, origin-destination matrices, and spatial networks were extracted. The mobility indices, based on these data with 2019 as a pre-COVID baseline, reveal that people have been taking fewer but longer trips since March 2020. Additionally, there has been a shift in interest from central and sub-central activity locations to outer areas in 2020, but signs of a return to the old norm in 2021 are emerging. Surprisingly, the study found a weak spatial relationship between reported COVID-19 cases and Twitter mobility at the Middle Layer Super Output Area level, contradicting prior research on mobility and virus transmission. The authors conclude that mobility patterns derived from geotagged tweets can provide valuable insights into urban changes at a fine spatiotemporal scale.

Linglong Ye et al.

Summary: The use of social media has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with higher levels of general use in 2019 and 2020 compared to 2017. Female participants were more likely to use social media for nonspecific and health-specific issues, and the gender gap in general use increased in 2019 and 2020. However, concerning health-related use, the gender gap expanded in 2019 but narrowed in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic led to increased use of social media, especially for health-related issues among males.

The association of adolescent e-cigarette harm perception to advertising exposure and marketing type

Man Hung et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between adolescent e-cigarette harm perception and five types of e-cigarette advertising exposures. The findings suggest that e-cigarette advertising influences adolescent perceptions of harm, particularly for social media and newspaper advertisements. However, adjusting for covariates such as environmental support and exposure to anti-tobacco marketing weakens the association between advertising and harm perception.

Smokers' cognitive and behavioural reactions during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic: Findings from the 2020 ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey

Shannon Gravely et al.

Summary: This study found that although nearly half of smokers considered quitting smoking because of COVID-19, the majority did not change their smoking behavior. Smokers were more likely to try quitting or reducing smoking if they were more concerned about the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 related to smoking. Smokers in Australia were the least likely to reduce or attempt to quit smoking, possibly due to the significantly lower impact of COVID-19 during the early phase of the pandemic in that country.
