Microstructural evolution, swelling and hardening of CVD-SiC induced by He ions irradiation at 650?C

Min Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, chemical vapor deposited (CVD) SiC samples were irradiated by 500 keV He ions at 650 degrees C to different doses. The effects of irradiation on microstructural evolution, surface swelling, and nanohardness change were investigated using TEM, AFM, and nanoindentation. The results showed that a high density of He bubbles and dislocation loops formed in the sample irradiated to a high dose, resulting in a swelling of 1.53%. Additionally, the irradiation induced an increase in hardness due to the pinning effect of defects and bubbles, with the hardening degree saturating at higher He ion doses.

In-situ TEM investigations on the microstructural evolution of SiC fibers under ion irradiation: Amorphization and grain growth

Shanshan Xu et al.

Summary: SiC/SiC composites are promising materials for nuclear systems, and SiC fibers play a critical role in the performance of these composites. This study investigated the microstructural evolution of Cansas-III SiC fibers under temperature effects using in-situ transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that at room temperature, the SiC fibers experienced heterogeneous amorphization and became completely amorphous at a certain dose. At temperatures above the critical temperature for crystalline-to-amorphous transition, the fibers underwent carbon packet disappearance and nano-grain growth. Possible mechanisms were discussed.

Interaction of Stacking Faults with point/extended defects in Fe-He irradiated 6H-SiC

H. S. Sen et al.

Summary: The study examined the microstructure evolution of 6H-SiC under sequential iron and helium ion irradiation, followed by annealing. Amorphization occurred after irradiation, but epitaxial recrystallization and the formation of defected polycrystalline 6H-SiC were observed during annealing. The interaction between stacking faults and microstructural defects was investigated, highlighting the complex interplay between mechanical and electronic factors.

The response of silicon carbide composites to He ion implantation and ramifications for use as a fusion reactor structural material

M. T. P. Rigby-Bell et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability and microstructural evolution of SiCf/SiC composites through high-energy ion irradiation and annealing experiments. The results show that the material undergoes crystallographic evolution and exhibits phenomena such as stress and lattice swelling during irradiation. However, the fibers themselves remain stable without radiation-induced defects. During annealing, bubbles in the material grow and agglomerate, but no delamination or microcracking is observed.

Effect of SHI irradiation and high temperature annealing on the microstructure of SiC implanted with Ag

H. A. A. Abdelbagi et al.

Summary: The influence of swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiation and annealing on the microstructure of polycrystalline SiC implanted with silver (Ag) was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). The results showed that Ag implantation led to complete amorphization of the near surface region of SiC, whereas SHI irradiation resulted in partial recrystallization of the amorphized layer. Additionally, annealing at 1100 degrees C showed larger crystal sizes in the as-implanted samples compared to SHI irradiated samples under the same conditions.

Summary: This study investigates the hardness of nanocrystalline silicon carbide with different grain sizes and compares it with amorphous and single-crystal SiC. It also explores the effects of irradiation on the hardness of different SiC structures. The results show that irradiation can increase or decrease the hardness of SiC, depending on the temperature and structure. The study highlights the importance of understanding the behavior of SiC under different conditions.

Microstructure response of Amosic-3 SiC/SiC composites under self-ion irradiation

Shanshan Xu et al.

Summary: Amosic-3 SiC/SiC composites were irradiated with 6 MeV Si ions at 300 degrees C to doses of 13 and 55 dpa, resulting in the loss of amorphous carbon packets and the growth of SiC grains. A mechanism based on grain growth theory was proposed to explain the relationship between carbon packet loss and SiC grain growth, with evidence from TEM images supporting the proposed mechanism.

Rare earth monosilicates as oxidation resistant interphase for SiCf/SiC CMC: Investigation of SiCf/Yb2SiO5 model composites

Xirui Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, SiC fiber and Yb2SiO5 composites were processed using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method. Different types of interfaces were achieved by adjusting the sintering temperature. It was found that the thermal expansion mismatch between Yb2SiO5 and SiC led to high interface stress, and the high temperature and electric field also had an effect on the interface. The study suggests that introducing the Yb2Si2O7-Yb2SiO5 phase can adjust the interfacial parameters and optimize the mechanical properties of the material.

Summary: In SiC ceramics, helium tends to aggregate at grain boundaries, but the interaction mechanisms between helium and grain boundaries are still unclear. In this study, first-principles calculations show that helium easily segregates at grain boundaries with open structures and low charge density, and these grain boundaries significantly enhance helium diffusion.
