Constructing multiple sites of metal-organic frameworks for efficient adsorption and selective separation of CO2

Zhiyong Li et al.

Summary: Efficient capture and selective separation of CO2 is achieved using stable Al-based MOFs with multiple adsorption sites, as demonstrated by MOF-303(Al) with high CO2 capacity and recyclability. Moreover, MOF-303(Al) exhibits excellent selective separation performance for CO2 from CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 mixtures, making it a potential material for natural gas purification. The multiple adsorption sites (mu-OH, N-H, N-N, and C-H) contribute to the superior CO2 adsorption and selective separation performance of MOF-303(Al), with the mu-OH and N-H sites playing a more significant role.

Mitigated Aging in a Defective Metal-Organic Framework Pillared Polymer of an Intrinsic Porosity Hybrid Membrane for Efficient Gas Separation

Chenxu Geng et al.

Summary: This study presents an alternative approach to alleviate the physical aging of PIM-based membranes by pillaring them with defect-engineered metal-organic framework nanoparticles. These nanoparticles prevent the collapse of micropores in the membrane, while also providing fast diffusion pathways and facilitating CO2 transport. The resulting mixed matrix membranes display high CO2 permeability and CO2/N-2 selectivity, with only a slight reduction in CO2 permeability observed under long-term operating conditions.

Incorporating KAUST-7 into PIM-1 towards mixed matrix membranes with long-term stable CO2/CH4 separation performance

Ke Chen et al.

Summary: The rational design of fillers and polymers is essential for the fabrication of high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this study, fluorinated metal-organic frameworks (KAUST-7) were blended with a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) to prepare MMMs. The resulting MMMs demonstrated enhanced CO2/CH4 separation performance and improved anti-physical aging property, thanks to the porous nature of KAUST-7 and its strong interactions with PIM-1. The optimized MMMs exhibited a significant increase in CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 selectivity, indicating their potential for practical CO2 separation applications.
