Growth in emergency department self-harm or suicidal ideation presentations in young people: Comparing trends before and since the COVID-19 first wave in New South Wales, Australia

Grant Sara et al.

Summary: Self-harm or suicidal ideation presentations by children and young people in New South Wales have increased before and since the COVID-19 pandemic. The growth rate has accelerated since COVID, particularly among adolescent females, while there has been no significant increase in presentations among adolescent males. Surprisingly, the presentation rates have increased the most in socio-economically advantaged and urban regions.

The environment a young person grows up in is associated with their mental health: A nationwide geospatial study using the integrated data infrastructure, New Zealand

M. Hobbs et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between the environment in which young people grow up and their mental health using population-level data. The findings suggest that young people residing in environments that constrain health are more likely to have mental health conditions, while those in health-promoting environments are less likely to have substance problems. However, the environment does not have a significant effect on behavioral conditions.

Estimating child maltreatment cases that could be alcohol-attributable in New Zealand

Taisia Huckle et al.

Summary: This study compared the risk of child maltreatment among children exposed to parents with an alcohol-attributable hospitalization or mental health/addiction service use in New Zealand. The findings showed a 65.1% increased risk of child maltreatment in such cases, and estimated that a significant portion of documented child maltreatment cases could be attributable to parents with severe or hazardous alcohol consumption.

Alcohol outlets and alcohol consumption in changing environments: prevalence and changes over time

Amy H. Auchincloss et al.

Summary: In cross-sectional analysis, higher density of alcohol outlets was associated with increased alcohol consumption, while distance from outlets was associated with decreased alcohol consumption. In longitudinal analysis, exposure to more outlets was associated with higher odds of drinking on more days per week and consuming more drinks per week. However, the association between changes in outlets and changes in consumption did not differ for residents in Pennsylvania compared to nearby states. Outlets were not related to binge drinking in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis.

Mixed progress in adolescent health and wellbeing in Aotearoa New Zealand 2001-2019: a population overview from the Youth2000 survey series

Theresa Fleming et al.

Summary: This study examines the progress of adolescent health and well-being among New Zealand secondary school students over the past two decades. The findings suggest significant reductions in substance use, sexual experience, and risky driving, but there has been a rapid increase in symptoms of depression, suicide thoughts, and suicide attempts during the same period. Family and school contexts have remained relatively stable, with some issues related to food and access to health services.

A Systematic Review of the Effects of Urban Living on Suicidality and Self-Harm in the UK and Ireland

Rose-Marie Satherley et al.

Summary: This systematic review found that urban living, particularly in deprived areas, is associated with an increased risk of suicidality and self-harm. However, the findings from different studies are mixed. Further research should focus on the clustering and additive effects of risk and protective factors for suicidality and self-harm in urban environments.

Socio-economic disparities in patients who present to hospital for self-harm: patients' characteristics and problems in the Multicentre Study of Self-harm in England

Galit Geulayov et al.

Summary: This study examined the disparities in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, as well as the problems preceding self-harm, among individuals who presented to hospitals for self-harm. The findings showed that individuals from more socio-economically deprived areas were overrepresented among self-harm presentations, and they also had higher rates of previous self-harm. Problems in relationships with friends were more prevalent in the most deprived group.

Effect of alcohol interventions on suicidal ideation and behaviour: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Alcohol-related psychological interventions may contribute to a reduction in self-harm and suicide attempts, but do not appear to have a significant impact on suicidal ideation or suicide deaths. There seems to be no significant difference in effectiveness between therapeutic approaches and intervention doses and durations.
