Revealing stability origin of Dion-Jacobson 2D perovskites with different-rigidity organic cations

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the stability of Dion-Jacobson (DJ) 2D perovskites is determined by the rigidity of the organic cations, which can induce co-adaptation of organic diammonium cations and inorganic [PbI6]4- octahedra to stabilize the 2D structure. By comparing three DJ 2D perovskites with different cation rigidity, the medium-rigidity cation-based one exhibits higher structural stability due to the ability to accommodate each other's geometries. This research explains the stability mechanism of DJ 2D perovskites and provides guidance for constructing highly stable candidates by adjusting the rigidity of organic cations.

Unravelling the Behavior of Dion-Jacobson Layered Hybrid Perovskites in Humid Environments

Algirdas Ducinskas et al.

Summary: While layered hybrid halide perovskites are generally believed to be more stable in humid conditions, this study reveals that the structure of Dion-Jacobson-type perovskites can be disrupted under such conditions. The original structure can be restored through annealing, and the hydration can be suppressed by generating a self-protective layer of PbI2.

Insight on the Stability of Thick Layers in 2D Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson Lead Iodide Perovskites

Eugenia S. Vasileiadou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermochemical properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites, revealing differences in enthalpy of formation between different series. Additionally, analysis of structural parameters and optical properties provides guiding principles for the targeted design and synthesis of 2D perovskites for efficient solar cell fabrication. Further stability studies on film samples indicate lower extrinsic stability of DJ materials in ambient air.

Summary: A multifluorinated aromatic spacer, 4F-PhDMA, has been developed for 2D DJ perovskites, showing high dissociation energy and improved stability. The optimized 2D DJ device with this spacer achieves a champion efficiency of 16.62%, higher than control devices, highlighting the importance of noncovalent interactions in achieving high efficiencies and stabilities in 2D DJ perovskite solar cells.
