Physiological Essence of Magnesium in Plants and Its Widespread Deficiency in the Farming System of China

Muhammad Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Magnesium is an essential nutrient for plants, playing a critical role in various physiological and biochemical processes. However, magnesium deficiency has become a limiting factor for crop production due to the introduction of high-yielding fertilizer-responsive cultivars, intensive cropping without adequate magnesium replenishment, soil acidification, and magnesium leaching. This article highlights the importance of magnesium in plant responses, the geographical distribution of magnesium deficiency, and the need to optimize fertilization strategies to increase crop productivity and quality.

Commercial wash of leafy vegetables do not significantly decrease bacterial load but leads to shifts in bacterial species composition

Anna Karin Rosberg et al.

Summary: The bacterial communities of leafy vegetables in commercial production undergo significant changes, where washing the produce does not reduce bacterial load but alters species composition. The cold chain process may lead to an increase in spoilage bacteria, with issues of cross-contamination detected in the wash water.

Processing of leafy vegetables matters: Damage and microbial community structure from field to bag

E. Mulaosmanovic et al.

Summary: Leafy vegetables undergo abiotic and biotic stresses, and a series of processing steps that cause mechanical injury. Machine-harvesting, washing, and packaging cause major phyllosphere perturbations, increasing levels of leaf damage. Bacterial species specific to different harvesting and processing steps replace core microbiota species.

Assessment of the Nutritional Value of Traditional Vegetables from Southern Chile as Potential Sources of Natural Ingredients

Mauricio Opazo-Navarrete et al.

Summary: Green leafy vegetables are a great source of proteins, dietary fibers, vitamins (ascorbic acid, choline, alpha-tocopherol, niacin), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron), carotenoids, and polyphenols. Among the eight vegetables assessed, spinach showed the most balanced nutritional profile. Only six out of 332 pesticide residues were detected in low concentrations.
