Role of protein in crevice corrosion of CoCrMo alloy: An investigation using wire beam electrodes

Heng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of protein and crevice width on crevice corrosion of CoCrMo alloy using wire beam electrodes. The results showed that proteins migrated to the crevice mouth, blocking it and decreasing Cl- concentration, which influenced corrosion distribution and rate. The accumulation of H+ inside the crevice promoted pitting corrosion, leading to crevice corrosion of the CoCrMo alloy. The corrosion rate of samples with a crevice width of 0.07 mm was five times higher than samples without a crevice.

A peridynamic model for crevice corrosion damage

Siavash Jafarzadeh et al.

Summary: A new peridynamic model for crevice corrosion damage was introduced and validated with experimental results. The model simplifies electrochemical mechanisms and efficiently computes corrosion rates in domains with extreme aspect ratios. Far-field boundary conditions were used to predict the progression of corrosion, showing that two factors are sufficient to predict crevice corrosion evolution.

Crevice corrosion behaviors of CoCrMo alloy and stainless steel 316L artificial joint materials in physiological saline

Xin Huang et al.

Summary: The width of crevices has different effects on corrosion for different alloys, with narrower crevices leading to more severe corrosion. CoCrMo alloy does not exhibit typical crevice corrosion, but the exterior of the crevices shows varying degrees of corrosion due to mass transfer effect caused by different widths of the crevices.

Crevice corrosion behavior of X70 steel in NaCl solution with different pH

J. Mu et al.

Summary: The crevice corrosion of X70 steel varies in different pH solutions, with pH=2 and pH=12 solutions promoting crevice corrosion while pH=6.8 solution prevents it. The increase of pH and Cl- inside crevice contribute to crevice corrosion in pH=2 solution, while the decrease of pH and increase of Cl- inside crevice lead to crevice corrosion in pH=12 solution.

A new experimental method to simulate dynamic crevice corrosion in modular hip arthroplasty

Edgar Hornus et al.

Summary: A new method was developed to study the complex corrosion mechanism found in modular hip arthroplasty, which showed severe corrosion of 316L stainless steel under dynamic conditions. The method was able to reproduce the extent and morphology of attack found in a retrieved implant.
