A novel efficient probabilistic prediction approach for train-induced ground vibrations based on transfer learning

Ruihua Liang et al.

Summary: In this study, a prediction method based on transfer learning is proposed to address the issues of high computational cost and prediction uncertainty in train-induced ground-borne vibration prediction. The method uses vehicle-track-coupled analytical model and three-dimensional finite element model to calculate train-induced ground vibration under various conditions as training samples for pre-training deep neural network models. The pre-trained models are then fine-tuned with measured vibration data using the transfer learning strategy. A Gaussian distribution is assumed for the predicted vibration acceleration levels to model the randomness of train-induced vibration. The fully trained model can complete the prediction in seconds. A case study demonstrates the feasibility and improvement of the proposed method by comparing the probabilistic prediction results with field measurements.

Mechanical behaviors of frozen clay under dynamic cyclic loadings with freeze-thaw cycles

Caixia Fan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive research on the coupled influence of freeze-thaw procedure and stress condition on cyclic mechanical properties of frozen clay. It investigates the dynamic responses of frozen clay at -10 degrees C under various confining pressures, cyclic loading amplitudes, and freeze-thaw cycles. The study shows that there are two-stage evolution features of resilient modulus in the cyclic loading process, with inflection points considered as endpoints for the post-compaction compression stage.

Microstructure and permeability evolution of remolded loess with different dry densities under saturated seepage

Panpan Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the saturated seepage behavior of remolded loess with different dry densities is inconsistent. The saturated permeability of loess samples is influenced by dry density and seepage time, with low dry density leading to pore blockage and structural collapse, while high dry density increasing saturated permeability. Through SEM imaging, it was found that chemical reactions during seepage enlarged pores in the loess samples.

Role of compaction and drying-wetting cycles on the capability of precompression stress to indicate load history of heavily disturbed soils

Andre Somavilla et al.

Summary: Wetting and drying cycles influence the precompression stress of soil, which should be considered as a state variable. The study reveals that the precompression stress of soil can be altered by wetting and drying cycles, with different clay content in soil affecting the change in Cip.

Evolution of soil-water and shrinkage characteristics of an expansive clay during freeze-thaw and drying-wetting cycles

Summary: The research shows that DW and FT cycles have a significant impact on the macrostructure of the clay, affecting water retention capacity and volumetric shrinkage, but have little effect on compression and plastic limits.
