Analysis method of the water inrush and collapse in jointed rock mass tunnels: A case study

Hongyun Fan et al.

Summary: Water inrush disaster is prone to occur when the tunnel is close to a fault fracture zone with abundant water. Understanding the evolution process and determining the critical thickness of water-resistant rock mass are crucial for preventing and controlling water inrush disasters in jointed rock tunnels. However, conventional single-phase numerical methods are unable to accurately simulate the interaction between solid and fluid in such disasters. To overcome this problem, we combined the advantages of discontinuous deformation analysis method (DDA) in simulating solid motion and smoothed particle hydrodynamics method (SPH) in simulating fluid motion, employing a two-dimensional DDA-SPH (2D DDA-SPH) method to simulate the interaction between solid and fluid in water inrush disasters. By replicating a solitary wave experiment and simulating water inrush disasters in the F2 fault of the Yonglian Tunnel, we successfully determined the critical thickness of water-resistant rock mass and analyzed the process of water inrush disasters, providing a theoretical basis for prevention and control of water inrush in jointed rock tunnels.

An Improved Discontinuous Deformation Analysis to Solve Numerical Creep Problem in Shear Direction

Pengcheng Yu et al.

Summary: Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) has been widely used for static and dynamic problems. In this study, a modified iterative process called open-close iteration (OCI) is proposed to overcome numerical creep phenomenon in block sliding cases. The reasons for the numerical creep, which is an additional sliding displacement, are investigated. The improved DDA with modified OCI is tested on several block sliding examples and shows significantly improved simulating accuracy.

Extended DDA with rotation remedies and cohesive crack model for simulation of the dynamic seismic landslide

Shilin Gong et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an integrated algorithm to address the failure of earthquake-induced landslides. By introducing a bilinear cohesive contact model into the discontinuous deformation analysis method, high-accuracy simulation can be achieved. The results indicate that the proposed method effectively eliminates distortion and false volume expansion in landslides, showing consistent results with experiments or field investigations.

Extension of 3-D coupled DDA-SPH method for dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction problems

Pengcheng Yu et al.

Summary: Soil-structure interaction problems are crucial in geotechnical engineering research. This paper presents an extended 3-D coupled DDA-SPH method for accurately simulating the large deformations and post-failure behavior of soil-structure interaction problems. The method combines the advantages of the discontinuous deformation method (DDA) for modeling the mechanical behavior of structures and the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique for describing the mechanical behavior of soil materials.

Dynamic modelling of soil-rock-mixture slopes using the coupled DDA-SPH method

Xinyan Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behaviors of soil-rock-mixture (SRM) slopes using the coupled method of discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The results show that the deformation of SRM slopes is influenced by the roundness and sorting coefficient of the rock blocks. The distribution of rocks near the potential sliding surface leads to smaller slope deformation compared to rocks distributed in the sliding body. Moreover, higher rock contents increase the runout distance of an SRM landslide and the maximum impact force on nearby buildings, posing a greater threat to structures and human lives.

Comparison of SPH boundary approaches in simulating frictional soil-structure interaction

Bahman Sheikh et al.

Summary: Two boundary algorithms in the framework of 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method are proposed to account for friction and energy dissipation at contacts with a solid boundary. The effect of SPH artificial viscosity and basal friction on interaction forces and granular column collapse is investigated, showing different flow regimes and the influence on final runout distance and deposit height.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamic behavior of high-speed long-runout landslides triggered by earthquakes and finds that the degradation of rock joints significantly influences the high velocities and long runout distances of these landslides. By simulating the Donghekou landslide induced by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the improved model is validated.
