Soil heavy metal pollution from Pb/Zn smelting regions in China and the remediation potential of biomineralization

Xinghua Luo et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the heavy metal pollution in soils caused by Pb/Zn smelting in China in the past 10 years, and highlights the urgent need for remediation due to the extreme toxicity. The study investigates the primary anthropogenic activities contributing to soil pollution in smelting areas, as well as the potential of biomineralization and several optimization methods for remediation.

A benzothiazole-based fluorescent probe for sensing Zn2+and its application

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: A novel probe L based on benzothiazole was synthesized and characterized for selective recognition of Zn2+. The probe showed high sensitivity with a low detection limit (0.678 μM) and rapid response time (30 s). The recognition mechanism was studied and the probe demonstrated potential for portable visual real-time monitoring of liquid and solid zinc salts.

Summary: This research presents the design, synthesis, and characterization of a benzoxazole-based fluorescent chemosensor (OPMP). The OPMP shows high sensitivity and selectivity for the cascade detection of Zn2+ and PO43- ions. Additionally, a test kit based on OPMP staining paper strips has been fabricated for the sequential detection of Zn2+ and PO43- ions.

Reversible Chemosensor for Bioimaging and Biosensing of Zn(II) and hpH in Cells, Larval Zebrafish, and Plants with Dual-Channel Fluorescence Signals

Xiaojun He et al.

Summary: Zinc (Zn(II)) is a vital trace element for humans, essential for maintaining normal growth, development, and metabolism. A dual-channel fluorescent signal chemosensor (DACH-fhba) was developed for selective sensing of Zn(II) and OH- in biosystems, showing high stability and reversibility in tracking these ions. The bioimaging using DACH-fhba successfully detected Zn(II) and OH- in live cells, larval zebrafish, and plants, indicating its potential for visual detection of these ions in organisms, contributing to a better understanding of their role in biosystems.

Geogenic pollution, fractionation and potential risks of Cd and Zn in soils from a mountainous region underlain by black shale

Yizhang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution, fractionation and potential risks of heavy metals in soils from a mountainous area with black shale outcropping, with emphasis on Cd and Zn. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in black shales reflected high geochemical baseline in the study area. Metals released from oxidative weathering were redistributed and retained during pedogenic processes, leading to enrichment of certain metals in soils.
