Feasibility of Alkali-Activated Low-Calcium Fly Ash as a Binder for Deep Soil Mixing

Vamsi N. K. Mypati et al.

Summary: This study investigates the suitability of low-calcium fly ash (FA) for stabilizing expansive soil (ES) using the in-situ deep soil mixing (DSM) technique. The results showed that the addition of a liquid alkali activator (LAA) consisting of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and liquid sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) solution effectively controlled the swell-shrink behavior of ES and resulted in higher strength characteristics. A binder ratio of LAA/FA=1.5 was identified as the optimum ratio for preparing DSM columns.

Shear behaviour of reinforced construction and demolition waste-based geopolymer concrete beams

Alper Aldemir et al.

Summary: Geopolymer concrete is a promising alternative to conventional concrete, as it relies on alkali-activated binders instead of Portland cement, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This study compared the structural performance of deficiently reinforced beams made from geopolymer concrete produced from construction and demolition wastes. The results showed that geopolymer concrete beams performed similarly to concrete beams of the same grade. The inclusion of recycled aggregates shifted the failure mechanism from flexure-dominated to shear-dominated. Additionally, the current code equations had a significant percentage error in capacity prediction.

The long-term failure mechanisms of alkali-activated slag mortar exposed to wet-dry cycles of sodium sulphate

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term performance of alkali-activated slag mortar exposed to wet-dry cycles and sodium sulphate solutions. Results showed that AAS mortars performed better than Portland cement and high sulphate resistant samples. The main failure mode for AAS mortar was external spalling due to the crystallisation/dissolving pressure of sodium sulphate. Moreover, unreacted slag exposed during sodium sulphate attack can continue to react to form silicon-rich gels, improving flexural strength.

External sulfate attack: comparison of several alternative binders

Laura Diaz Caselles et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the resistance of different binders to external sulfate attack under similar experimental conditions. Ordinary Portland cement exhibited high expansions due to excess ettringite formation, while Portland cement without C(3)A showed lower expansions but later cracking due to gypsum. Alternative binders had low expansions, attributed to the absence of C(3)A and portlandite, as well as the formation of ettringite or lack of calcium during hydration.

Effect of Dolomite Filler on the Sulfuric Acid Resistance of Alkali-Activated Slag Binders

Hailong Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of dolomite filler in combination with pulverized fly ash on the sulfuric acid resistance of alkali-activated slag (AAS). The results show that the incorporation of dolomite and fly ash exacerbates alkali leaching and alkalinity loss in AAS, leading to increased strength loss in sulfuric acid solutions due to a coarsened pore structure. Additionally, dolomite incorporation reduces the formation of gypsum and glauberite in AAS at low and intermediate acid concentrations, but in strong acid media, dolomite dissolution contributes to the formation of deleterious sulfate minerals.
