Evaluation of effects of short and long-term thermo-oxidative aging on chemo-rheological and mechanical properties of asphalt concretes

S. C. Some et al.

Summary: The study assessed the effects of short and long-term thermo-oxidative aging on various properties of asphalt concretes. A modified aging procedure was used to evaluate the changes in properties over time. The impact of long-term aging on the chemo-rheological properties of asphalt binders was also investigated. At the binder scale, there was an increase in certain properties and a decrease in penetration grade with aging. At the mixture scale, the stiffness modulus increased while other properties decreased with aging. Correlations between the aging index and various properties were proposed.

Chengwei Xing et al.

Summary: The application of hot recycled asphalt mixtures is becoming more popular in pavement engineering due to its environmental and economic benefits. The degree of blending (DOB) between virgin and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) asphalt binders plays a crucial role in the performance of the hot recycled asphalt mixture. This paper reviews the current studies on the blending condition between virgin and RAP asphalt binders, introduces various theories and evaluation methods, discusses critical factors affecting the DOB, and suggests future research directions and challenges.

Microevolution of Polymer-Bitumen Phase Interaction in High-Viscosity Modified Bitumen during the Aging of Reactive Oxygen Species

Mingjun Hu et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to investigate the microevolution of high-viscosity modified bitumen (HVMB) in reactive oxygen species (ROS) aging. The results show that the presence of polymers significantly affects the distribution of bee structures in bitumen. The destruction of the polymer phase starts from the inside of polymers during ROS aging, and the polymer degrades from the intact network structure to isolated small molecules as the ROS concentration increases. Polymer-bitumen interactions are widespread in HVMB, and a large number of bitumen bee structures are also present in the polymer zone (PZ) of HVMB. The clarification of these microstructural characteristics lays the foundation for a deeper comprehension of the aging mechanism of HVMB induced by ROS.

Approach for accurately characterizing nonlinear viscoelastic and nonrecoverable properties of asphalt binders based on MSCR test

Yiren Sun et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new approach for analyzing MSCR test data by including an additional one-cycle LSCR test and the Schapery's NLVE model. The results show that this method accurately separates the recoverable and nonrecoverable responses, redefines the indicators of percent recovery and nonrecoverable creep compliance, and characterizes the stress dependence and permanent deformation resistance of asphalt binder, providing an effective and accurate approach for high-temperature performance evaluation.

Modeling the modulus of bitumen/SBS composite at different temperatures based on kinetic models

Chuanqi Yan et al.

Summary: The study introduces a kinetic model to describe the relationship between PMB modulus and temperature, proposes a modified model for better fitting results, and uses nonlinear least squares regression to determine kinetic parameters. The method could be a promising approach to study the temperature-dependent properties and state transition behaviors of PMB composite.

Study on properties and improving mechanism of OGFC-13 asphalt mixtures modified by novel rubber pellets

Jiangkai Song et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of novel rubber-modified pellets (RMP) on the performance of open-grade friction courses (OGFC) asphalt mixtures and its improving mechanism. The results show that the OGFC-13 with 2% RMP possess improved fracture energy, creep slope, and spalling slope, while maintaining excellent drainage capacity. The improved performance is attributed to a physical cross-linking reaction between modifiers and RMP, leading to a denser network structure detected in the asphalt. Therefore, replacing traditional composite modified asphalt with RMP has the potential to extend the service life of OGFC-13 asphalt pavement.

Establishment of a Quantitative Time Conversion Relationship Between Laboratory Accelerated Weathering Aging and Outdoor Natural Aging of the High-Content Polymer Modified Asphalt Applied in Porous Asphalt Pavement: From Theory to Experiment

Mingjun Hu et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the time conversion relationship between indoor accelerated weathering aging (AWA) and outdoor natural aging of high-content polymer modified asphalt (HCPMA) used in porous asphalt pavement. The study found that the AWA test can simulate natural aging and that HCPMA exhibits similar changes in rheological properties during indoor AWA and outdoor natural aging.

Experimental study of the performance of porous ultra-thin asphalt overlay

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that in Porous ultra-thin asphalt overlay (PUAO), as the air voids increased, the high-temperature rutting dynamic stability decreased, the tensile strength ratio first decreased and then increased, and the acoustic absorption coefficient gradually increased, but the peak frequency value shifted. The PUAO/AC-13 double-layer specimens showed better performance in dynamic stability and low-temperature bending strength compared to the PUAO single-layer specimens, but had a smaller permeability coefficient. The International Friction Index results showed that PUAO material had excellent skid resistance performance.

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a rapid method to predict the rheological characteristics of asphalt binders subjected to oxidative aging based on PAV, investigating the relationships between aging kinetics model parameters in oven aging and PAV aging. By calculating the activation energy from PAV data and utilizing universal correlations, the crossover modulus could be predicted rapidly and accurately, saving significant time and effort in the laboratory.

Summary: The study investigated the aging depth gradient distribution of HVMA under the influence of solar radiation and diffuse oxygen. Results showed that as solar radiation intensity and aging time increased, the aging depth of HVMA also increased, with significant aging effects on the surface. Solar radiation activates asphalt and polymer molecules, leading to oxidation and depolymerization reactions with diffuse oxygen.

Durability Evaluation of Single-Component Polyurethane-Bonded Porous Mixtures

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the pavement service and antiaging performance of single-component polyurethane-bonded porous mixtures (PPMs) and found that PPM air voids and connected air voids were negatively linearly correlated with the adhesive-aggregate ratio. PPM outperformed an open-graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt mixture in terms of dynamic and Marshall stabilities, Cantabro loss rates, and -10 degrees C bending-failure strains. An inflection point in pavement service performance was observed when the adhesive-aggregate ratio reached 5%-6%.
