Effects of aggregate strength and mass fraction on mesoscopic fracture characteristics of cemented rockfill from gangue as recycled aggregate

Jiangyu Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a discrete element model considering media properties and interface differences was constructed to reveal the mesoscopic fracture characteristic of cemented rockfill. The effects of aggregate strength and mass fraction on strength, deformation, energy, and cracking of cemented rockfill were investigated. The results showed that the failure induced by damaged aggregates is more severe than the generally concerned two-element intergranular fracture. The development of cemented rockfill requires attention to the compatibility characterized by the aggregates to cement matrix strength ratio and aggregate mass fraction.

Effects of chloride salts on strength, hydration, and microstructure of cemented tailings backfill with one-part alkali-activated slag

Gengjie Zhu et al.

Summary: For mines located in saline areas, the use of mine water containing chloride salts can be an efficient way to prepare cemented tailings backfill (CTB) for mined-out area treatment, saving freshwater resources. However, the impact of chloride salts on the hydration behavior and strength properties of CTB remains unclear. This study investigates the effects of different concentrations of NaCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 on the strength of CTB prepared with alkali-activated slag binder. The results provide insights into the hydration process and microstructure of CTB, enabling the application of chloride-containing mixing water in saline mines.

Synergistic effect of activator nature and curing temperature on time-dependent rheological behavior of cemented paste backfill containing alkali-activated slag

Haiqiang Jiang et al.

Summary: The combined influence of curing temperature, silica modulus, and activator concentration on the time-dependent rheology of alkali-activated slag-cemented paste backfill (AAS-CPB) was investigated. Higher curing temperature reduced fluidity and increased thixotropy of CPB. A higher activator concentration weakened rheological parameters initially, but resulted in a more rapid growth rate later. AAS-CPB with higher silica modulus consistently had lower rheological parameters. The linear correlation between thixotropy and plastic viscosity differed between OPC-CPBs and AAS-CPBs.

Experimental study on delamination and strength characteristics of cemented waste rock backfill

Nan Yao et al.

Summary: The relation between segregation and strength of cemented waste rock backfill (CWRB) was analyzed by examining the aggregate distribution, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and failure law of the CWRB with different mass concentrations and accelerator contents. The test results showed that higher mass concentration and accelerator content led to more uniform aggregate distribution, improved skeleton structure, increased UCS, and changed material properties from plastic to elastic. The strength of the CWRB increased exponentially with the increase of the aggregate uniformity coefficient.

Research on fracture behavior and reinforcement mechanism of fiber-reinforced locally layered backfill: Experiments and models

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: Locally fiber-reinforced layered cemented paste backfill (FR-LCPB) was prepared and tested to investigate its fracture resistance under different fiber content and reinforcement position. The results showed that the addition of fibers significantly improved the fracture resistance of FR-LCPB, with an optimal fiber content of 0.6%. The flexural strength, peak deflection, and bending modulus of FR-LCPB increased with the decrease of the distance between the fiber reinforcement position and the lower layer. Furthermore, the addition of fibers enhanced the CPB's brittle damage characteristic, ensuring it retained some strength even after failing.

Insights into mechanical property and damage evaluation of a novel waste-based coal gangue-filled backfill

Zhifa Qin et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and damage mechanism of a novel waste-based coal gangue-filled backfill (CGFB) under the action of overburdened rock were investigated in this study. The results show that the compressive strength of CGFB samples mainly depends on the mechanical behavior of the cement-tailings grout (CTG) and the microscopic features of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the coal gangue (CG) aggregate and CTG matrix. The response of ringing counts and AE energy to the development of stress shows a clear time-varying response law.

Summary: In this study, a novel two-step intercritical heat treatment was used to adjust the microstructure of an ultra heavy E500 offshore engineering steel. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the steel were significantly improved after thermo-mechanical controlled processing, especially in terms of elongation and low-temperature toughness at the center location. This improvement can be attributed to a more homogeneous chemical composition distribution and the fine multiphase microstructure with stable retained austenite obtained in the segregation region.

Mesoscopic damage evolution and acoustic emission characteristics of cemented paste backfill under different loading rates

Yuxin Hao et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the damage evolution of cemented paste backfill (CPB) under different loading rates using indoor tests and numerical simulations. The moment tensor theory is introduced to simulate the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics during the loading process, and the energy conservation principle is used to explore the loading rate (LR) effect on the backfill. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the backfill first increases and then decreases as LR increases. Microcracks in the backfill slowly increase and are not significantly affected by LR until after the peak value, when they rapidly expand and propagate to form mesoscopic cracks. The temporal and spatial distribution of AE events based on the moment tensor theory are consistent with laboratory test results, and they can be divided into different periods. The characteristics of AE events are also consistent with the evolution of microcracks, with fewer events before the peak value and a significant increase in magnitude and frequency after the peak value. AE events dense zone and events with larger magnitudes increase under higher LR. Furthermore, the boundary energy and dissipation energy gradually increase, while the strain energy first increases and then decreases. These findings provide insights into the damage evolution characteristics of backfill under different LR and AE mesoscopic simulation.

Physico-chemical and micro-structural behavior of cemented mine backfill: Effect of pH in dam tailings

Tugrul Kasap et al.

Summary: The management of tailings created during ore processing is a challenging task for mining companies and the environment. This study focuses on the usability of dam tailings in cemented mine/paste backfill (CMB/CPB), considering the physico-chemical and micro-structural aspects. The results show that the strength of backfill can be improved by increasing basicity/age, but backfills made with sulfide-rich tailings may experience a decrease in strength. Additionally, the pH values detected by chemical tests can increase or decrease over time due to acid formations and erosions, which play a key role in the deterioration of CPB physically, chemically, and microstructurally.

Effect of wetting-drying cycle on hydraulic and mechanical properties of cemented paste backfill of the recycled solid wastes

Summary: The study shows that with increasing wetting-drying cycles, the porosity and permeability of CPB samples increase, with those having smaller particle size distribution and cementing strength being more sensitive. The uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of CPB samples deteriorate during wetting-drying cycles, especially for those with smaller particle size distribution and cementing strength. The deterioration process of mechanical properties of CPB samples due to wetting-drying cycles can be divided into initial deterioration and re-deterioration stages, with the periodic destruction of the cemented structures verified through microstructure analysis.
