Extrusion-blown starch/PBAT biodegradable active films incorporated with high retentions of tea polyphenols and the release kinetics into food simulants

Xiaosong Zhai et al.

Summary: Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), starch, plasticizer, and tea polyphenols (TP) were synthesized into masterbatches without pre-dispersion and then blown into active films to reduce TP degradation. TP had strong interaction with starch through hydrogen bonds, but little interaction with PBAT. Incorporating TP improved barrier properties but slightly decreased mechanical properties of the films. The short-term degradation of the starch/PBAT film was slowed down by TP, while the long-term degradation was accelerated. The high retention and stability of TP in active films make them suitable for industrial development of active packaging materials.

Inherently acidic films based on chitosan lactate-doped starches and pullulan as carries of nisin: A comparative study of controlled-release and antimicrobial properties

Dariusz Kowalczyk et al.

Summary: Nisin Z was incorporated into edible films with different formulations, and the release rate was influenced by the NIS/polymer ratio. Starch-based films showed slower release of NIS compared to CHL and PUL/CHL carriers. NIS exhibited antibacterial activity against certain pathogens and improved UV-blocking ability of the films, but high concentration of NIS weakened the tensile strength of the films.

Improvement in the optical properties of starch coatings via chemical-physical combination strategy for fruits preservation

Yu Li et al.

Summary: The optical properties of food packaging are important for product appearance and consumer preference. This study developed a highly transparent starch-based coating with improved quality preservation and extended shelf life. The coating was achieved through phosphorylation and oxidation treatments on cassava starch, resulting in increased phosphorus content and reduced molecular weight and crystallinity. The coating exhibited high transparency, UV protection, and enhanced physicochemical properties compared to the native starch-based coating. It showed promise in preserving the quality of fruits, such as strawberries and fresh-cut apples. This work provides a novel solution for highly transparent food packaging materials.

Astaxanthin protected against the adverse effects induced by diesel exhaust particulate matter via improving membrane stability and anti-oxidative property

Tong Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of astaxanthin (AST) on diesel exhaust particulate matter (DPM)-induced injury and the underlying mechanism. The results showed that AST significantly suppressed DNA damage and inflammation caused by DPM, and prevented the endocytosis and intracellular accumulation of DPM by regulating the stability and fluidity of plasma membranes. Additionally, AST effectively inhibited oxidative stress and protected the structure and function of mitochondria.
