Quality analysis of genomic DNA and authentication of fisheries products based on distinct methods of DNA extraction

Italo Lutz et al.

Summary: This study compared three different protocols of DNA extraction and found that the saline procedure and commercial kit provided higher DNA concentrations. Only the saline protocol resulted in pure DNA samples. The commercial kit had a shorter processing time but higher cost, while the phenol-chloroform method was cheaper but less effective. Therefore, the choice of DNA extraction method should consider available financial resources and time constraints.

DNA barcoding identification of Greek freshwater fishes

Alexandros Tsoupas et al.

Summary: Biodiversity is crucial for ecosystem functioning and efficiency, and Greece has a rich diversity of species, particularly freshwater fishes. This study aimed to use DNA barcoding to identify Greek freshwater fish species and examine the agreement between traditional classification and molecular data. The method proved effective for the majority of species, revealing closely related species and hidden diversity. The findings contribute to the understanding of Greek and European freshwater fish biodiversity.

DNA barcoding reveals global and local influences on patterns of mislabeling and substitution in the trade of fish in Mexico

Adrian Munguia-Vega et al.

Summary: Mislabeling of seafood is a global issue that can misrepresent the status and consumption of wild fish stocks. A study conducted in Mexico found a 30.8% mislabeling rate among 48 different commercial names for 376 fish samples. Globally traded species were commonly used as substitutes, while popular local names showed the highest mislabeling rates.

COIBar-RFLP Molecular Strategy Discriminates Species and Unveils Commercial Frauds in Fishery Products

Anna Maria Pappalardo et al.

Summary: The study used DNA analysis to authenticate species and detect fraud in seafood products. By employing the COIBar-RFLP molecular strategy, seven different fish species were successfully distinguished, and cases of species substitution were identified. The results demonstrate that COIBar-RFLP can be an effective tool for authenticating fish in seafood products.

Telmo J. R. Fernandes et al.

Summary: This review presents the current status of DNA barcodes in seafood species authentication, covering barcode regions, reference databases, related methodologies, and various applications. COI gene is the preferred target in animal species identification, and Sanger sequencing-based DNA barcoding is the most widely used approach in seafood authentication. However, significant advances have been made in recent years towards DNA barcoding strategies, including the use of next generation sequencing.

Recovery of assessed global fish stocks remains uncertain

Gregory L. Britten et al.

Summary: Assessment of global fisheries status shows that some stocks have not yet reached rebuilding targets, with 40% of resources being overexploited. Recent rates of recovery are almost zero, with a significant proportion of stocks experiencing declining biomass and increasing exploitation rates. These results caution against overly optimistic assessments of fisheries and recommend a precautionary management approach for full rebuilding of depleted fisheries worldwide.
