Cis- and Trans-variations of Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase Provide New Insights into the Mechanisms of Diverged Pattern of Phenotypic Plasticity for Temperature Adaptation in Two Congeneric Oyster Species

Chaogang Wang et al.

Summary: This study identifies differences in the Scd gene between cold-adapted Crassostrea gigas and warm-adapted Crassostrea angulata. One single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is found to potentially affect Scd transcription, leading to different levels of Scd expression in the two species. Additionally, differences in the expression of the positive transcription factor Srebp are also observed, which may contribute to the divergent phenotypic plasticity between the two species.

Organic carbon dynamics and microbial community response to oyster reef restoration

Nia R. Hurst et al.

Summary: Oyster reefs, in addition to their contribution to water quality improvement and habitat creation, can store and cycle organic carbon (OC). A study on oyster reef restoration found that restored reefs showed significant changes in OC cycling, resulting in the highest concentrations of total carbon and organic carbon among the three reef types.

High Temperature Alters Leaf Lipid Membrane Composition Associated with Photochemistry of PSII and Membrane Thermostability in Rice Seedlings

Paphitchaya Prasertthai et al.

Summary: Rice cultivated in the tropics faces high temperature stress, which can impact its growth and survival. This study aimed to understand the response of rice to high temperature stress by analyzing photosystem II efficiency, membrane stability, and fatty acid composition. The results showed that certain rice genotypes exhibited high heat tolerance, with lower increases in electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde levels, and stable photosystem II efficiency. These heat-tolerant genotypes also showed changes in the fatty acid composition, with a reduction in unsaturated fatty acids and an increase in long-chain fatty acids. These fatty acid changes may contribute to enhanced photosynthetic performance and heat tolerance in rice.

Molecular cloning, characterization, and tissue distribution of c-Myc from blood clam Tegillarca granosa and its role in cadmium-induced stress response

Defeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Cadmium pollution poses a threat to the cultivation of blood clam in coastal regions of the East China Sea. The study found that Tgc-Myc protein is widely distributed in blood clams and its expression is upregulated in response to cadmium exposure. Knockdown of Tgc-Myc resulted in decreased expression of stress response/detoxification genes and cell proliferation gene IGF1R in blood clams.

Summary: This review examines the historical presence and decline of tropical oyster reefs and compares their diversity and functional differences with temperate reefs. The study finds that tropical oyster reefs have higher diversity, continuous spatfall, faster growth, and mixed-species reefs compared to temperate reefs. Evidence of unsustainable and destructive harvesting emphasizes the need for restoration efforts in tropical oyster reefs.

Summary: This study reveals the changes in three-dimensional spatial organization of the genome in rice under heat stress conditions, including A/B compartment transition, increase in the size of topologically associated domains, and loss of short-range interactions, which influence chromatin accessibility and gene expression. Different rice cultivars show distinct responses to heat stress, with 93-11 exhibiting more dynamic changes in gene expression and chromatin accessibility.

Stress-induced transcriptional memory accelerates promoter-proximal pause release and decelerates termination over mitotic divisions

Anniina Vihervaara et al.

Summary: Heat shock rapidly reprograms transcription, but gene and enhancer transcription can fully recover from stress. The study found that cells precisely restored RNA polymerase II distribution at gene bodies and enhancers upon recovery from stress. Moreover, heat-induced transcriptional memory acts through different mechanisms in embryonic fibroblasts and K562 erythroleukemia cells, including promoting Pol II pause release and slowing down transcription termination.
