Impact of the exposome on food allergy development

Timothy P. Moran

Summary: The review summarizes recent studies on how specific factors within the external exposome may impact the development of food allergy. Nonoral exposure to food allergens within the living environment is a risk factor for food sensitization and allergy. Factors associated with rural lifestyle and early-life microbial exposures may be protective against food allergy development, while urbanization and decreased exposure to microbes may contribute to food allergy development. Studies on the role of residential greenness in food allergy development have mixed results.

The maternal diet index in pregnancy is associated with offspring allergic diseases: the Healthy Start study

Carina Venter et al.

Summary: This study found associations between an index of maternal dietary intake during pregnancy and multiple offspring allergic diseases, with intake of vegetables and yogurt associated with prevention of any allergy, while other components were associated with increased disease.

Incidence and timing of offspring asthma, wheeze, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and food allergy and association with maternal history of asthma and allergic rhinitis

Carina Venter et al.

Summary: The study found that children born to women with a history of asthma have a significantly increased risk of asthma, atopic dermatitis/eczema, and wheeze, but not allergic rhinitis or food allergies. Maternal history of allergic rhinitis was not associated with child allergy outcomes, while maternal history of both asthma and allergic rhinitis was only associated with child atopic dermatitis/eczema.

Perfluoroalkyl substances exposure and immunity, allergic response, infection, and asthma in children: review of epidemiologic studies

Haley von Holst et al.

Summary: Recent literature has documented major immune-related sequelae from PFAS exposures on infant and child health outcomes, including strong evidence of immunosuppression, reduced vaccine efficacy, increased risk of infections, and limited impact on allergies, atopic dermatitis, asthma, and lung function. Further research is needed to understand PFAS exposure pathways and the mechanisms of action on the developing immune system, with a recommendation for large prospective studies tracking mothers and children from infancy to school-age for optimal evidence of PFAS immunotoxic effects. Regular assessments of antibodies and vaccine response during growth years could provide valuable insights.
