CFD simulations of the tree effect on the outdoor microclimate by coupling the canopy energy balance model

Ruibin Li et al.

Summary: Trees can effectively regulate the urban microclimate and are influenced by the changes in microclimate conditions. This paper combines the canopy energy balance (CEB) model with CFD simulations to study the effects of trees on outdoor microclimate. The results show that trees have different effects on outdoor microclimate under different wind speeds, air conditions, solar radiation, and stomatal resistance. Trees can mitigate the effects of environmental changes on leaf surface temperature by regulating stomatal resistance.

A simulation study on the effects of tree height variations on the facade temperature of enclosed courtyard in North China

Yifei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the microclimate of an enclosed courtyard and investigates the effect of tree height variations on facade temperatures. The results reveal the optimization strategies of existing vegetation in urban built-up areas to control the aggravation of the urban heat island effect.

Impacts of future urbanization on urban microclimate and thermal comfort over the Mumbai metropolitan region, India

Bhanage Vinayak et al.

Summary: This study examines the microclimatic impacts of future urbanization in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region using a dynamic downscaling approach. The results show that urbanization will lead to an increase in surface air temperature and thermal discomfort, but this can be mitigated through a mitigation strategy.

Efficient cooling of cities at global scale using urban green space to mitigate urban heat island effects in different climatic regions

Chengcong Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of urban green space (UGS) patch characteristics, natural and anthropogenic factors on its cooling effect in different climate zones using a cooling effect framework. The study found that larger UGS areas had better cooling effects in all climate zones. Complex shapes and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) had stronger effects in tropical and temperate zones, while natural factors dominated in tropical and arid zones, and anthropogenic factors dominated in temperate and continental zones.

Experimental and theoretical study of urban tree instantaneous and hourly transpiration rates and their cooling effect in hot and humid area

Senlin Zheng et al.

Summary: The study examines the transpiration rate and cooling effects of urban trees, establishes a model based on field measurements for predicting transpiration rate, and validates its accuracy at different time scales. Incorporating the transpiration model into urban canopy model will enhance predictability of water vapor cycle, thermal comfort and surface energy budgets in urban environments.
