Digital light processing porous TPMS structural HA & akermanite bioceramics with optimized performance for cancellous bone repair

Summary: Amorphous bioglass has been used to improve the bioactivity of HA, but the crystallization of bioglass during sintering has made it difficult to tailor the properties of HA bioceramics. In this study, TPMS structural HA ceramics doped with akermanite showed increased porosity, bioactivity, and mechanical strength. The substitution of Ca2+ ions by Mg2+ ions from akermanite led to the decomposition of HA into beta-TCP, increasing porosity and enhancing mechanical strength. By optimizing the content of akermanite, bioceramics exhibited high porosity, appropriate compressive strength, enhanced in vitro bioactivity, and good biocompatibility, suitable for repairing cancellous bone defects.

Zygoma Augmentation With 3D Printed Bioactive Glass-Ceramic Implant

Summary: Zygoma, located in the middle third of the face, has a significant impact on facial impression. CaO-SiO2-P2O5-B2O3 glass-ceramics (BGS-7) has been reported as a nonresorbable bone grafting material with bioactivity and radiopacity. With the development of CAD-CAM technology, patient-specific designs of BGS-7 can be manufactured. A clinical case showed that 3D printed BGS-7 implant remained in place and bony fusion occurred, indicating its effectiveness and safety for zygoma bone defects.

Stereolithography printing of bone scaffolds using biofunctional calcium phosphate nanoparticles

Summary: Calcium phosphate (CaP) is widely used for bone defect repair due to its good biocompatibility and osteoconductivity, and additive manufacturing of CaP bioceramics has recently attracted great attention. The study found that biofunctional elements such as magnesium can promote the formation of whitlockite-type calcium phosphate from amorphous calcium phosphate precursors. Gyroid scaffolds with bionic structures fabricated from these nanoparticles may serve as biofunctional scaffolds for bone repair.

Cryogenic 3D printing of dual-delivery scaffolds for improved bone regeneration with enhanced vascularization

Summary: 3D printing is increasingly used to create advanced bone tissue engineering scaffolds with biomimetic structures and matched mechanical strengths for improved bone regeneration. Customized scaffolds were produced using cryogenic 3D printing of beta-tricalcium phosphate and osteogenic peptide inks, and coated with angiogenic peptide hydrogel to enhance vascularization. The scaffolds had a hierarchically porous structure similar to human cancellous bone and showed high viability for both endothelial cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Improved in vitro migration and angiogenesis were observed for scaffolds with angiogenic peptide, while enhanced osteogenic differentiation was seen in scaffolds containing osteogenic peptide. In vivo, scaffolds with both peptides showed increased angiogenesis and new bone formation.
