Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Patients With Cutibacterium acnes Endocarditis

Floris J. Heinen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with C acnes endocarditis. It finds that this disease is common in male patients with prosthetic heart valves, and its clinical presentation is atypical with often no fever and inflammatory markers. The prolonged time to positivity of blood culture results delays diagnosis. Not performing surgery when indicated is associated with higher mortality rates, and prosthetic valve endocarditis with small vegetations seems prone to recurrence.

True infection or contamination in patients with positive Cutibacterium blood cultures-a retrospective cohort study

Jolin Boman et al.

Summary: Cutibacterium, a genus often considered a contaminant in blood cultures, can also cause severe infections related to implanted foreign materials. This study investigated the incidence and features of true Cutibacterium infections. Among 312 patients with positive Cutibacterium blood cultures between 2015 and 2020, 49 were classified as true infections. Most cases involved elderly men with comorbidities and had an unknown or respiratory tract focus of infection.

Cutibacterium acnes: An emerging pathogen in culture negative bacterial prosthetic valve infective endocarditis (IE)

Summary: Infections caused by Cutibacterium acnes are increasing in patients with implanted foreign material, especially those with prosthetic valves and devices. 16S RNA gene sequencing can be helpful for identifying pathogens in cases of culture negative endocarditis.
