Digital finance, environmental regulation, and green development efficiency of China

Summary: In the face of the contradiction between economic development and the ecological environment, promoting green development has become crucial for sustainable economic growth. Digital finance, as an innovative financial model integrating finance and digital technology, offers new opportunities for achieving green development. This research examines the mechanisms of digital finance and environmental regulation on green development efficiency, measures the efficiency of green development in 30 provinces of China from 2011 to 2020, and analyzes the relationships among digital finance, environmental regulation, and green development efficiency using a dynamic panel GMM model. The findings show that digital finance contributes to the efficiency improvement of green development, while environmental regulation still has a dampening effect on green development efficiency. However, the synergy between digital finance and environmental regulation has a positive impact on green development, and digital finance helps alleviate financing constraints caused by environmental regulation and weakens its negative effect on green development efficiency. Thus, the government should leverage the active role of digital finance in eco-environmental governance, optimize the top-level design of environmental regulation, and promote industrial structure upgrading and optimal allocation of financial resources.

The results show that investments in energy sector resources, international commerce, and technological innovation are inconsistent with GDP and natural resources. The study proposes strategies such as stabilising fluctuating natural resource costs, encouraging green financing, and increasing investment in energy resources.

How will promoting the digital economy affect electricity intensity?

Summary: The digital economy plays a crucial role in transforming economic and social development and has a diverse impact on carbon neutrality. However, the relationship between digitalization and electricity intensity remains unclear and debatable. This study fills the gap by measuring the level of the digital economy in 227 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2019 and investigating the nonlinear effects and mechanisms of the digital economy on electricity intensity using the panel smooth transition model. The findings show that the digital economy promotes electricity intensity with an inverted U-shaped effect, indicating that it increases electricity intensity through infrastructure development and electronic item usage while reducing it through changes in consumption and technological advancements. This study provides valuable insights and improves understanding regarding the correlation between the digital economy and electricity intensity.
