Fabrication of C/SiC composites by siliconizing carbon fiber reinforced nanoporous carbon matrix preforms and their properties

Rida Zhao et al.

Summary: RMI-C/SiC composites fabricated using a carbon fiber reinforced nanoporous carbon matrix preform demonstrate high performance with dense and pure SiC matrix and intact carbon fibers. In contrast, composites based on conventional pyrocarbon or resin carbon matrixes show poorer properties with less SiC, residual silicon and carbon, and corroded fibers. This work opens up a new way for the development of high-performance ceramic matrix composites by siliconizing C/C preforms with nanoporous carbon matrix.

Structural characteristics and ablative behavior of YF3 modified C/C-ZrC-SiC composites and their preparation by molten salt assisted reactive melt infiltration

Yuzhu Shen et al.

Summary: YF3 modified C/C-ZrC-SiC composites were prepared using molten salt assisted reactive melt infiltration, and the infiltration mechanism and ablative behavior were discussed. YF3 effectively seals existing pores and cracks in C/C-ZrC-SiC material. During ablation, YF3 modified composites form yttrium oxide stabilized zirconia, resulting in reduced mass ablation rate and linear ablation rate.

Fabrication method and mechanical properties of biomimetic Cf/ZrB2-SiC ceramic composites with bouligand structures

Yumin An et al.

Summary: In this study, biomimetic Cf/ZrB2-SiC ceramic composites with bouligand structures were successfully fabricated by combining precursor impregnation, coating, helical assembly, and hot-pressing sintering. Analysis of the microstructures and carbon fiber content revealed that the coated ceramic layer can heal cracks and improve the mechanical properties, while the mechanical properties can be tuned by the carbon fiber content. This research is of great importance for the development of biomimetic ceramic composites.

Anisotropic friction behavior of aligned and oriented graphite flakes/copper composite

Baoqiang Hou et al.

Summary: This study prepared and tested graphite flakes/copper composites with specific dihedral angles, showing an increase in friction coefficient with larger dihedral angles due to adhesion, and a decrease due to ploughing. The friction coefficients were lower at 30 to 60 degrees, and the wear rate decreased monotonically as the dihedral angle increased.

Structure evolution and ablative mechanism of C/C-ZrC-ZrxCuy composites with low porosity fabricated by pressure assisted reactive melt infiltration

Yuanqi Weng et al.

Summary: C/C-ZrC-ZrxCuy composites were fabricated using the PARMI process, yielding a matrix with three different ZrC-ZrxCuy regions and sequentially decreasing ZrC particle sizes. The heat-absorbing effect of the Cu phase slowed down surface temperature increase during 30 seconds of ablation. After 60 seconds of ablation, the porous ZrO2 skeleton transformed into a protective integrated cover, reducing the ablation rates of the composites significantly.

An efficient and low-cost liquid silicon infiltration method to prepare SiC-coated carbon short fiber for fiber protection of Cf/SiC ceramic matrix composites

Jie Tang et al.

Summary: Liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) is a fast and cost-effective method for manufacturing C-f/SiC composites, but protection of carbon fibers is needed due to high reactivity. A preparation method for C-f@SiC short fibers as fiber protection in LSI process was reported, successfully constructing silicon carbide layers on carbon fibers.

Graphite-based solid lubricant for high-temperature lubrication

Wenjuan Huai et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type of eco-friendly high-temperature graphite-based solid lubricant was successfully developed, which exhibited excellent tribological properties with a very low friction coefficient and good wear protection for workpieces under high temperature conditions in the air atmosphere. Analytical techniques revealed the presence of solid lubricant graphite in the lubricating coating after high-temperature friction tests, and a synergistic effect between the protective surface film and the solid lubricant graphite was proposed to explain the superior lubricating performance.
