Influence of Nanostructuring Sensors Based on Graphene Oxide and PEDOT:PSS for Methanol Detection

Leila S. M. Alves et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) composites with conducting polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly (styrenensulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were used as methanol vapor sensors. An optimal ratio of 3% (v/v) PEDOT:PSS in GO dispersion was found, and the active layer was treated with sonication to change the nanostructure, resulting in higher responses when applied to methanol vapor sensors. The improved responses are due to differences found on the composite surface.

Ultracompact Vernier-effect-improved sensor by a single microfiber-knot resonator

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: Fiber-optic sensors are widely used in modern sensing technologies due to their low cost, strong electromagnetic interference immunity, and remote sensing capability. We propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultracompact Vernier-effect-improved sensor using only a single microfiber-knot resonator. By controlling the optical beating with the spectral ripple of a super light emitting diode (SLED), we achieve 20x sensitivity enhancement for quantitative temperature monitoring. Our sensor provides a practical method to realize the Vernier effect in fiber-optic sensors and opens up new possibilities for their development.

Change in the gas sensing mechanism and improved sensing response on ion-irradiated palladium-graphene oxide nanocomposite

Manan Mehta et al.

Summary: In this study, Pd-graphene oxide (Pd-GO) nanocomposite layers were synthesized on SiO2/Si substrates using a chemical method, and then treated with swift heavy ion irradiation. The ion-irradiated Pd-GO samples showed enhanced sensing response and improved conductivity compared to the pristine Pd-GO samples. The change in conductivity after irradiation was attributed to the reduction of the GO layer, while the improvement in sensitivity was due to the increase in structural defects.

Gas sensing properties of graphene oxide loaded with SrTiO3 nanoparticles

Khaoula Kacem et al.

Summary: This paper presents a simple and low-cost method for fabricating gas sensing devices using graphene oxide (GO) decorated with strontium titanate perovskite (SrTiO3). The active layers developed were capable of detecting hazardous gases such as NO2, CO2, and NH3 with high sensitivity and selectivity. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were analyzed using various experimental techniques, and a gas sensing mechanism was proposed and discussed. These findings demonstrate that functionalizing GO with SrTiO3 can enhance the adsorption capability and sensitivity of GO-based gas sensors.

Nonlinear error compensation for microfiber knot current sensors based on artificial neural network

Minghui Chen et al.

Summary: To achieve a good linear response, a deep belief network (DBN) is used to predict and compensate for the nonlinear error of a current sensor based on micro knot ring (MKR). By utilizing the structural parameters, current, output light intensity, and working process of the MKR, the DBN accurately forecasts the nonlinear intensity errors. The DBN with a single-restricted Boltzmann machine shows the best prediction performance.

Summary: In this letter, a new scheme for improving the phase sensitivity of an interferometer using slow light in a microknot resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The experimental results show that the phase sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with slow light is 10.4 times that of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer without slow light. The proposed hybrid structure has the advantages of easy fabrication, small footprint, high sensitivity, and wide slow light bandwidth, making it suitable for potential applications in miniaturization of spectrometer and high sensitivity sensing.

An acoustic sensor based on balloon-shaped microfiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Xiaojun Zhu et al.

Summary: An acoustic sensor based on a balloon-shaped microfiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (BSMZI) is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The BSMZI is constructed by bending a tapered polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF), which exhibits interference phenomenon due to the phase difference between the fundamental mode and cladding modes of the balloon-shaped loop structure. By placing the sensor in front of a loudspeaker and using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as the signal reflector, the transmission spectra of the sensor can be changed according to the acoustic signals. With the ability to detect acoustic signals and potential applications in fields such as nuclear magnetic medical treatment and security interception, the sensor shows promising performance with a maximum sensitivity of 115 mV/Pa and a minimum detection pressure of 2.1 mPa/root Hz within the acoustic frequency range of 100 Hz to 2000 Hz.

Summary: We have presented an all-optical temperature sensor device integrated with MXene V2C and a microfiber knot resonator (MKR) for the first time. The experimental results have shown a normalized temperature sensing efficiency of 1.65 dB℃-1 mm(-1). The high sensing efficiency of our proposed temperature sensor is attributed to the efficient coupling of the highly photothermal material MXene and the runway-type resonator structure, providing a better understanding for the development of all-fiber sensor devices.

Ultra-fast detection and monitoring of cancerous volatile organic compounds in environment using graphene oxide modified CNT aerogel hybrid gas sensor

Pratiksha M. Biranje et al.

Summary: This paper studied the ultra-fast detection of cancerous VOCs using a carbon nanotube aerogel (CNT aerogel) and graphene oxide (GO) hybrid network. The study found that by optimizing the loading concentration of GO and O/C ratios, a highly sensitive CNT aerogel-GO hybrid sensor can be obtained. This sensor can detect a range of non-polar VOCs and showed better sensing performance compared to the bare CNT aerogel sensor. Chemical and structural analysis indicated that the oxygen loading can change the structure of the CNT aerogel, making it ideal for sensing applications. Electron micrography images confirmed the uniformity of the GO layer on the CNT aerogel. Overall, the study concluded that a sensitive and fast CNT aerogel-GO hybrid sensor can be used for the detection and continuous monitoring of cancerous VOCs.
