The importance of effective moisture and landscape controls on diatom assemblages and primary production in Roche Lake, British Columbia, Canada over the past ca. 1800 years

Graham R. Mushet et al.

Summary: Lakes in the semiarid Southern Interior Plateau of British Columbia, Canada are vulnerable to climate-driven changes in water quantity and quality. However, there is a lack of long-term monitoring records to assess the effects of hydroclimate conditions on lake function. This study presents a paleolimnological record from Roche Lake that shows how changes in lake level and atmospheric forcing have influenced lake function. It also suggests that complex interactions between climatic conditions and external forcing have led to variations in moisture and aridity in the region. Lakes in this area are sensitive to hydroclimate changes, which may have negative consequences for salmonid habitat.

Summary: Climate change has led to recent declines in mountain snowpack and earlier runoff, intensifying hydrological droughts in western North America. Current understanding of trends and variability in mountain snowpack is limited, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Testing for differences between two distributions in the presence of serial correlation using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Kuiper's tests

John R. Lanzante

Summary: Testing for distributional differences in climate research often involves the KS and KU tests. However, ignoring temporal coherence due to daily autocorrelation in the data can lead to significant inference errors. These errors can be mitigated through effective use of look-up tables or broadly applying polynomial coefficients fit to simulation results.

A lake sediment-based paleoecological reconstruction of late Holocene fire history and vegetation change in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, USA

Christopher S. Cooper et al.

Summary: Analyses of sediment core from Stella Lake in Nevada provided a 2000-year record of fire history and vegetation change for the Great Basin. Fire activity was minimal from the beginning of the first millennium to AD 750, but increased slightly at the onset of the Medieval Climate Anomaly. Major fire events during the Little Ice Age significantly influenced vegetation change in the catchment area.

Wildfire and climate change adaptation of western North American forests: a case for intentional management

Paul F. Hessburg et al.

Summary: Forest landscapes in western North America have undergone significant changes in the past two centuries, accelerated by climate warming in recent decades. Historical forest management practices are no longer suitable for modern realities, requiring new strategies to address ecological and social challenges. Indigenous tribes' past and present management practices offer insights for resilient forest conditions, but further research and experimentation are needed.
