Identifying Levers for Improvement: Examining Proximal Processes and Contextual Influences on Preschool Language Development

Elizabeth Burke Hadley et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors influencing children's oral language development in preschool, including both the proximal processes and contextual influences. The results show that teacher language practices vary across activity settings and program type, with more beneficial practices used more often in large group settings and in preschools with extensive professional development and coaching support. Specific practices like vocabulary talk and elicitation strategies are positively related to children's language skills.

Objective quantification of homophily in children with and without disabilities in naturalistic contexts

Chitra Banarjee et al.

Summary: This study quantified homophily in children with developmental disabilities (DD) and typical development (TD) using objective measures of social movement. The results showed that children tend to interact more with others who are similar to themselves, as evidenced by their approach velocities and time spent in social contact.

Preschool Language Environments and Social Interactions in an Early Intervention Classroom: A Pilot Study

Stephanie A. Custode et al.

Summary: Preschoolers' language abilities are related to their social interactions. However, few studies have explored the relationship between social interactions and objective measures of real-time language environments. In this pilot study, associations were found between children's language environments and their social interactions with peers and teachers. Children who spoke more had more positive peer interactions, and those who received more input from teachers had more positive teacher-child interactions, especially for those with lower language output.

Objectively measured teacher and preschooler vocalizations: Phonemic diversity is associated with language abilities

Samantha G. Mitsven et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of teacher and child speech-related vocalizations on the phonemic diversity and language abilities of preschool children. The results show that the phonemic diversity of teacher vocalizations affects the phonemic diversity of children's vocalizations, which in turn predicts language abilities at the end of the year.

Activity settings, content, and pedagogical strategies in preschool classrooms: Do these influence the interactions we observe?

Milagros Nores et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the associations between two different perspectives on assessing preschool classroom processes and suggests that teachers' planning of programming and timing in classroom activities may define the context in which higher or lower quality interactions develop. Results indicate that process quality may be dependent on teachers' decisions on how to structure the day and which content areas to focus on.

Longitudinal data collection to follow social network and language development dynamics at preschool

Sicheng Dai et al.

Summary: DyLNet is a large-scale longitudinal social experiment designed to observe the relations between child socialisation and oral language learning at preschool. The experiment recorded proximity interactions between about 200 children and adults every 5 seconds using autonomous Radio Frequency Identification Wireless Proximity Sensors. The dataset includes cleaned interaction data from a complete school year, as well as survey data about the socio-demographic profile and language development level of the pupils.

Sound Source Selection Based on Head Movements in Natural Group Conversation

Hao Lu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the predictive role of head angle on active talkers in group conversation and developed a source-selection algorithm based on a hidden Markov model. The results showed that head angle can predict active talkers, but there were some variations in different talker layouts. This study is important for improving the performance of hearing assistance devices.

Reciprocal patterns of peer speech in preschoolers with and without hearing loss

Lynn K. Perry et al.

Summary: This study highlights the significance of dyadic peer vocal interactions in enhancing language use and abilities for children, including those with hearing loss. Vocalizations from peers positively contribute to children's vocalizations and language skills. The findings emphasize the importance of social contact and vocal interaction in preschool classrooms.

A granular perspective on inclusion: Objectively measured interactions of preschoolers with and without autism

Regina M. Fasano et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of children's real-time interactions with peers on language development, specifically focusing on children with ASD, DD, and TD. The findings suggest that children with ASD exhibit lower levels of vocalizations with peers and lower centrality in social speech networks, which are associated with their language abilities. Peers and social networks play a significant role in real-time language use and the developing language abilities of children with ASD in inclusive classrooms.

Relating early care and education quality to preschool outcomes: The same or different models for different outcomes?

Margaret Burchinal et al.

Summary: This study aims to expand definitions of early care and education (ECE) quality by exploring the relationship between ECE quality dimensions and developmental outcomes. Results showed that different ECE dimensions were related to gains in different outcomes, and measures based on observing individual children's experiences provided strong associations with child outcomes compared to ratings of teacher-child interactions.

Comparing Automatic and Manual Measures of Parent-Infant Conversational Turns: A Word of Caution

Naja Ferjan Ramirez et al.

Summary: The study found that LENA's estimates of adult-child conversational turn count were significantly higher than manually coded counts, especially in younger age groups. There were wide disagreements between the two methods, indicating potential issues with automatic measurement of parent-infant verbal interaction. Future studies should validate LENA's estimates with manual coding.

ALICE: An open-source tool for automatic measurement of phoneme, syllable, and word counts from child-centered daylong recordings

Okko Rasanen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the possibility of using phonemes or syllables as alternative linguistic units to measure child language input. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of measuring different units from theoretical and technical points of view, and examines the practical applicability of measuring such units using a novel system called Automatic LInguistic unit Count Estimator (ALICE). The study shows that language-independent measurement of phoneme counts is somewhat more accurate than syllables or words, but all three are highly correlated with human annotations. The authors share an open-source implementation of ALICE for use by the language research community.

Circumspection in using automated measures: Talker gender and addressee affect error rates for adult speech detection in the Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) system

Matthew Lehet et al.

Summary: The study evaluated error rates in estimating the amount of language input to children in their home environments using the LENA audio processing system, finding that error rates were influenced by adult talkers' gender and addressee. LENA's classifications and Adult Word Count showed random and systematic errors across recordings, particularly when adult females were addressing children. Relying solely on LENA for estimating adult language input may lead to invalid clinical and research conclusions, requiring further validation studies and cautious usage.
